My sitter cancels on occasion, which is why it's important for me to have her come regularly. I'd say one of us has some scheduling conflict or illness at least once a month,

@Mrs. Bee - my back-up can't do that time. I only have 2 babysitters I know. Oh well, at least I tried!

@Artbee - I tell myself the same thing. I think it is ok to sacrifice yourself when they are young. I feel like I will get lots of time back when she is older and will be sad that she doesn't need me for everything anymore! Ah, grass is always greener.

I'm with you. I hate asking for help. For some reason I feel so guity! Even though I'm with my baby girl all day every day, I feel like if I ask for someone to help me for just a little bit, I'm saying I don't want to be with her. When logically I know everybody needs a break!

And then I'll tell this to my husband, he'll tell me I'm crazy and he'll tell me I need to tell him when I need a break. I'll tell him I won't, we'll discuss that we need to just have a time set that he takes the baby so I don't have to ask for it. And that doesn't happen.

Well the good thing is I can't say I'm missing any of my baby girls life :) I already feel like she's growing up so fast, and I get to be there for every second of it!

generally i don't like asking for help, but when it comes to childcare, i have no problem asking for help! it's not like i'm relaxing when we have a babysitter come in... i'm always working or cleaning. i do feel guilty because i don't get to spend as much time with my kids as i want to, but such is life.

@andrea - maybe have a couple of babysitters that you can call up? sorry to hear she cancelled! :(

I'm with all of you gals. I never like asking for help (in fact, we're hosting Thanksgiving this year and I plan on doing EVERYTHING just because I am stubborn) because I've always thought it was a sign of weakness. However, I help out others a lot, so I know it doesn't mean you're weak.

This is definitely something I need to work on before HabeyBaby gets here.

Yes! My husband is a pro at asking for help whereas I suck at it. Sure the hubs helps out but sometimes having your parents help is such a blessing. I don't ask but sometimes they can see we need it.

It's been a lifesaver to have her. There are moments when I think "oh no big deal, I don't need help or a break" but after the fact, I realize how energized I am from some away time and I thank my lucky stars my husband insisted!

@Andrea- I mostly mean that I have one friend who always does it and it drives me crazy! She's pretty extreme and I always think she's ending up making life harder on herself.
So if I don't want to be a hypocrite, I'd better watch myself.
I'm sure you're very pretty ;)

We have a sitter that comes for 4-5 hours once a week, on Fridays. It gives me time to mop the floors, take a shower and do my errands. At first I didn't want to do have help, but I realized I was then trying to jam stuff in on the weekends and was sacrificing family time. So now, I can do what I need to do and DS has some play time with his sitter. He hates her, but she takes him out in his stroller for long walks and she hold him when he sleeps. She's really a doll, I hope he warms up to her soon!

Glad I could help! That's the thing that helps me reign in my tendencies. I think about how unattractive that quality is in others and remember that I have control over whether I do it too.
Have a nice little break :)

My husband has been really good at helping to break me of this tendency. He forces me to stop pushing through and reminds me to take care of myself.

The more practice I get at it, the easier it is. I think you just have to remind yourself that you do a better job when you are 100% (which means taking care of yourself!) and that no one likes a martyr!

Good luck!

I definitely have trouble asking for help and like to do everything myself. We are fortunate and could afford help like live-in nanny, regular nanny, regular babysitter, etc and yet we choose not to (we don't have any family around to help). Well, I guess I do. I think my hubs wouldn't mind if we had a babysitter more often. I often feel silly being tired/stressed when there is an easy solution of calling up a babysitter. I am so stubborn, though. Anyone else like this?

Perhaps some of the mommy guilt is also at play here...like I should be taking care of my daughter and not paying someone else to do it.
