His mom still talks about the importance of keeping kids "busy and out of trouble." She LOVES gymnastics but the minute she doesn't want to do it then we will stop. We want to sign up for swim lessons again this summer. But are trying to find the time. We're very active people, and my older daughter already is too, so I expect that she'll enjoy various sports as she grows up. I hope that she carries a love of being active into her adult life. For me, it is equally important for there to be enough down time for children to run around and be kids. I plan to expose DD to lots of different activities, but it's up to her to choose what to invest in. I don't ever want her to feel like she's obligated, or that she'd be disappointing anyone if her interests didn't align with ours. I was a super social butterfly in school and was basically in everything once (didn't always stick to it, though, haha). I was in the drama club, and school newspaper, and yearbook, and Spanish club, and school tennis team, and band. And Cross country. </p> <p>And then outside of school I just had piano lessons, church stuff, and tennis. And after I turned 16, I worked part time in a restaurant.</p> <p>My husband was decidedly more sporty. I don't know how LO will be. It will be interesting to see--the thing is, I'm a pretty lazy parent, so I don't see myself to be the type that shuttles my kids around to something every single day. I would never make her do a traditional sport.</p> <p>Music is important to me, so I will offer an instrument with lessons. But I think it important to continue, not just try an instrument, so it would be for the long haul.</p> <p>I think a martial art or yoga could be good mentally and physically, so I will likely offer that. She seems to be interested in dance, so we may try that. My mom is a professional clarinet player and I played flute for about 15 years, so music is big in my family. DS is obsessed with mom's playing, so I don't think it'll be too hard to get him interested in music. </p> <p>I'd also like them to find some kind of physical sport or activity. I know as an adult it's so much harder to be fit and healthy and it's so much harder if you've had a completely sedentary life. I think it's important for kids to get exercise too. I won't push them to do things they don't like or aren't good at, but I hope to encourage them to find things to enjoy.</p> <p>When DS is a little older we'll try out soccer and t-ball and see which he likes. I don't want him playing hockey or football though, I'd be too afraid of injuries. Oh, and he won't be allowed to join the boy scouts unless they become less anti-gay.</p> <p>I'm not sure what we'll have DD do. I want to try and put him in martial arts when he's old enough. With his low muscle tone I feel strongly about keeping him active and strong.</p> <p>As for activities and extra curriculurs, I want him to do anything his heart desires! My family was also very poor, single mom income with no support. My mom saved a lot for it and drove or bussed me. While I appreciate it now, I found I lacked direction. I want to limit the number while giving my kids an option.
