Growing up, DH and his sister had to do an activity every season. His mom still talks about the importance of keeping kids "busy and out of trouble." I would have been MISERABLE being that scheduled as a kid.

We will encourage LO to try different activities, and of course I hope that she finds some things that she loves (either "activities" or hobbies), but continued participation will not be required.

@deerylou: 100% agree. She LOVES gymnastics but the minute she doesn't want to do it then we will stop. We want to sign up for swim lessons again this summer. But are trying to find the time. I don't want her going from gymnastics to swim every Sat. It is just too much. I think a lot of parents don't let their kids be kids.

@sarac: agreed!

I mean I hope they would do an activity but it wont be required. I don't believe in weighing kids down with tons of extra activities.

Absolutely not in the way that a lot of people are describing here - there will be nothing 'required' outside of school. We're very active people, and my older daughter already is too, so I expect that she'll enjoy various sports as she grows up. I hope that she carries a love of being active into her adult life. But I will certainly not be requiring her to do any 'leadership' activities, whatever that is, or any specific art or sport.

@deerylou: Yes, well said. It's more about letting LO find what her passions are rather than having her complete an arbitrary checklist of obligatory activities.

I hope LO is involved in some sort of activity because I hope she's passionate about life and because I hope (and try to foster) curiosity - but lists of "must-do" things in every season/category - nope.

I hope so. Just one or 2 things but I will never force them into doing anything. I did ballet/tap, gymnastics, ran track for a year and later was in school leadership. Never at the same time and my parents were always very laid back about it.

Personally, I think kids are a little overloaded, these days. For me, it is equally important for there to be enough down time for children to run around and be kids. I plan to expose DD to lots of different activities, but it's up to her to choose what to invest in. I don't ever want her to feel like she's obligated, or that she'd be disappointing anyone if her interests didn't align with ours. Just want her to find purpose and passion.

Well...I really wanted to learn the piano when I was younger but we couldn't afford it. So, I hope one of them will like it! ;)

In reality I think Dd1 will be very much into sports. She already loves it without us initiating and is very athletic. Even her teachers have picked up on this. So I'm guessing she will be in some kind of team sport. Right now her favorites are soccer and hockey.

I don't know! I was a super social butterfly in school and was basically in everything once (didn't always stick to it, though, haha). I was in the drama club, and school newspaper, and yearbook, and Spanish club, and school tennis team, and band. And Cross country.

And then outside of school I just had piano lessons, church stuff, and tennis. And after I turned 16, I worked part time in a restaurant.

My husband was decidedly more sporty. I don't know how LO will be. It will be interesting to see--the thing is, I'm a pretty lazy parent, so I don't see myself to be the type that shuttles my kids around to something every single day. So that might be her downfall. :silly:

I don't want to put a lot of requirements on anyone. I would never make her do a traditional sport.

Music is important to me, so I will offer an instrument with lessons. But I think it important to continue, not just try an instrument, so it would be for the long haul.

I think a martial art or yoga could be good mentally and physically, so I will likely offer that. She seems to be interested in dance, so we may try that. And swimming because it seems like a necessary skill.

I hope to offer what she is interested in but not put a lot of pressure, just follow her lead.

Yes, they will need to pick an instrument to play for at least a few years to try it. My mom is a professional clarinet player and I played flute for about 15 years, so music is big in my family. DS is obsessed with mom's playing, so I don't think it'll be too hard to get him interested in music.

I'd also like them to find some kind of physical sport or activity. I know as an adult it's so much harder to be fit and healthy and it's so much harder if you've had a completely sedentary life. I think it's important for kids to get exercise too. I won't push them to do things they don't like or aren't good at, but I hope to encourage them to find things to enjoy.

When DS is a little older we'll try out soccer and t-ball and see which he likes. I don't want him playing hockey or football though, I'd be too afraid of injuries. Oh, and he won't be allowed to join the boy scouts unless they become less anti-gay.

I'm not sure what we'll have DD do. Probably soccer too (that's what I played!) and maybe gymnastics or whatever else she might be into.

Oh, and I'd like to introduce both kids to golf :).

T has been in gymnastics since he was 11 months old and I hope he continues doing it. I want to try and put him in martial arts when he's old enough. With his low muscle tone I feel strongly about keeping him active and strong.

As for activities and extra curriculurs, I want him to do anything his heart desires! DH and I talked about how we don't care what he ends up liking but that he has a passion for something.

Yes! I don't care what he chooses, but I think he should have exposure to activities and enrichment! At 3.5 he takes 2 classes: gym and music. When he's older I'll most likely sign him up for an instrument lesson and a sport. I'd like to avoid him playing Football. Luckily our town doesn't even have a team!

My family were really poor so I didn't do anything outside kf school, or through school either.

I hope to enrol E in some things - perhaps Scouts and a drama club, or a sport? I will see what she is into. I will definitely insist on music lessons, piano and another instrument maybe? Right now, she only goes to toddler dance classes and Id prefer if she didn't want to dance as she grows up (I hate the body image issues), but if she really loves it I will have to go along with it.

My kids will have choices within choices.

Must do:
- swimming
- skating basic
- 1 sport (hockey, martial arts etc)
- 1 arts (visual, musical, dramatic etc)
- leadership (when they are older)
- 1 free choice
- my family's native language.

Imo extra curricular are just as important as school.

In my youth, I had no choices but my mom put me in way too many things. My family was also very poor, single mom income with no support. My mom saved a lot for it and drove or bussed me. While I appreciate it now, I found I lacked direction. I want to limit the number while giving my kids an option. List of extracurricular things I did as a child:
- swimming
- skating
- gymnastics
- piano
- drama
- leadership
- language
- sculpting
- abacus
- drawing
- computers

Things I wanted to do but was not allowed:
- archery (finally learned in adulthood, did end up teaching a bit at a summer camp)
- martial arts

I hope our boys will have a winter and a summer activity, but also hope they don't have a million interests and want to participate in 3-4 extracurrilars in the same season. I would probably make them pick 2 max.

I was a social butterfly and was in EVERYTHING in school, my yearbook post is ridiculous with all my activities. I hope my girls find something they love and are passionate about. We enrolled LO1 in gymnastics and she LOVES it and I very much hope she chooses to stick with it, but I will not pressure her to do so.

Whether it be through school or somewhere else? Music, sports, art, a club of some sort...

I wasn't involved in much as a kid, but I wasn't into sports. I also didn't really know I had options outside of what school offered (maybe I didn't, I'm not sure) but I think it would have been nice to do something I enjoyed as an extra curricular activity. I hope my kids get excited about doing something, but if they don't want to do anything then I'm ok with that too.
