The doctors told her she would never, ever be able to conceive naturally. She even had 6 (!!!!!) surgeries to correct whatever they thought the issues could be. A family friend also had many unsuccessful rounds of IVF back in the '90s. Her mom took DES in the 1950s when she was pregnant with her, and it affected her fertility.
