@Anagram: I have always wondered this too. When I was receiving chemo, I was told to not only avoid deli meats, but also produce unless I cleaned it carefully at home. Meaning, even for cantaloup there is a big risk because if the outer skin is bad and you cut in, the knife carries that bacteria into the fruit. I had to hand wash and clean all lettuce too.

Also, I was told to avoid condiment containers that sit on tables at restaurants. I had to ask for single serving containers.

@Mrs. J: Oh, yes, it's definitely about the machine, not the actual frozen treat. Something about how they cannot proper clean the machine to guarantee they are getting rid of any potential bacteria or something.

@Raindrop: my friend ate soft serve ice cream every day (she didn't know you weren't supposed to), and she had her baby at 33 weeks. he went on to be super smart though (he's 5 now).

i got food poisoning once from a deli sandwich before i was pregnant and i was violently ill, so no way was i risking getting sick while pregnant. i avoided all deli meats and soft serve ice cream!

I *believe* the fro-yo/soft serve issue comes from if the machine is clean or not, not the actual delicious treat.

I actually was pregnant the first time when the cantaloupe thing happened, and had some in my house. I threw it right away, but I didn't get sick from eating it beforehand. I think it's important just to listen to your own intuition and eat anything deemed risky either not at all, or in moderation. I definitely had soft serve last time, a couple of sandwiches with deli meats, and probably a few other things, and I most likely will this pregnancy, too, I just won't go crazy with any of those things.

Small outbreak happened here a few years ago resulting in a stillbirth at 37 weeks and preterm labor at 36 weeks. Not from soft serve or deli meat, but it does happen.

Can anyone explain why the last major outbreak of listeria in the U.S. was cantaloupe, but that's never on the "avoid" lists?

http://www.cnn.com/2012/05/03/health/listeria-outbreak-investigation
http://yourlife.usatoday.com/fitness-food/safety/story/2011-11-03/Cantaloupe-listeria-outbreak-most-deadly-since-1924/51064012/1

Also, it seems like the most common source of listeria is indeed deli and processed meats eaten without being heated, but the odds are still very low.

http://churnyourown.com/2011/09/28/listeria/
http://www.cdc.gov/listeria/statistics.html

The CDC reports only 1 case of fetal death from listeria in the entire U.S. in 2012 (from an imported unpasteurized cheese). There are no cases listed that I can find that involve soft serve any time time in the last 10 years. Anyone else find any info on the soft-serve thing?

I'm just really interested in all of this now. I get pregnant women not wanting to take chances....but driving a car is far more dangerous to pregnant women, and most of us do it every day. But we're supposed to give up soft serve ice cream for 9 months because it's listed on websites like Babycenter without any recent research to back it up?

Anyway....I ate soft serve 3 times this week. =) You can see where I stand on that.

I have a very good friend that is an OBGYN. She has stories.

When I was pregnant she gave me the low down on a lot of things, she said alcohol and caffeine in moderation was find (I didn't do any alcohol but I did have a bit of caffeine... just a little!). Taking warm baths was fine.

One of her very few warnings was about unpasterurized foods. She did say the chances of getting listeriosis was low but it basically puts you into early labor.

She says she has delivered a few babies because of it and they come out just fine usually just greyish, the anmtoic fliud turns this bright green, she said like alien green and the babies skin has a greyish color but all in all the baby is fine as long as it's at a state that it could be delievered.

She said I could take the chance but she would recommend holding off till I was at least 26 weeks along so that if that did happen to me the baby would have a chance to survive outside the womb. Anyways that scared the heck out of me so I avoided those foods like the plauge.

She this to me while I was pregnant and I don't have the best memory from that time so I could be getting some of her story wrong, Ms. Jacks might have better insight. :)

The last major listeria outbreak in the US was in 2011 from cantaloupe. And yet...somehow that's not on the list of "foods to avoid". The chances of ANYONE getting listeria is 2-3 in 1 million in the U.S.

This article is really informative. And it doesn't even mention soft serve! http://naturalscientist.blogspot.com/2007/03/ask-scientist-listeria-and-pregnancy.html
