@MamaMoose: I kind of wonder why. My husband used to be a teacher, and it would have been very hard for him I think!

@Jumpingjacks: @mrsjazz: That gives me hope too! I'm in the marketing/advertising industry, so very very similar! What was their position exactly, if you don't mind my asking?

@sulli301: Aww, that's cute! And impressive that she's been in the same position for so long!

@mamabolt: I agree that would be the biggest challenge, next to getting your employer on board. What industry are you in, if you don't mind?

@Witz: It seems like such an awesome set-up! I am also a very collaborative person so having someone to share responsibilities with would really work for my working style. Do you mind sharing what industry your husband is in?

This is an option for employees at my husband's job. I don't think they allow a 50/50 split, but they have people who do 40/60 splits. They get vacation and salary according to the split, but only the person with the higher percentage gets the benefits. I wish I worked there, I would love to do something like this!

Two of my coworkers did this for a period of time - one would work M-W and the other W-F. It recently ended when one of them got a different full time job and the other moved back to full time to cover the gap. I worked at a different site from both of them so never really got to talk to them about it, but it seems like it was a great arrangement! I think the hardest thing is finding someone else who is looking for the same arrangement - either you have to hire a new PT employee or have two employees who both want to go PT at the same time.

My mother is a dietitian & she has job shared for years! She is on 3 days & off 2, but she actually just switched to being on 4 days for the first time since before I was born(!)

One of the positions on my team that reports to me used to be a job share. It was in the Public Relations industry. It worked out ok, but I think the primary reason it worked was that both staff were new moms who were really motivated towards ensuring it kept working. Ultimately, though it only lasted a couple of years because eventually both wanted more hours!

@Running Elley: @mrs. bird: @artbee: It seems like this is popular with teachers! I should start researching the parallels to my career to form my argument one day. :)

@mrsjazz: I don't think it's something that is advertised often, either. I think in most cases, someone who has a position that they want to transition to part-time looks for someone who would be willing to share it with, and then they propose it to their employer.

My middle school band teachers did that. They were husband and wife, and started job sharing when they had their LO.

i did it for a nanny position years ago. i didn't want to work as many hours as they needed (60+ daytime hours), so we hired someone else to cover 2 half days a week, mostly during nap time, so i could take a class & have time for things like Drs appts/running errands that needed to be done during the day. she could also cover for me if i needed time off for some reason and i could cover for her if she couldn't make it that day.

in school i did observations in a class that had 2 teachers doing a job share. it's becoming very popular because they don't have to be offered the same benefits as full time employees so they are less expensive for the schools. i didn't think in an elementary class it was a great idea, but they made it work.

I do have a friend who job shares. She's an accountant and it has worked well for her up until recently. Her partner has been slacking which means my friend has to check her work and has been bringing work home.

I would love to job share with another mom (or be able to stay at home full-time and write) but it's not something I see advertised.

I actually know someone who will be starting to do this in August! She’s a teacher and both she and another teacher friend had babies this March. They’re now on maternity leave/soon to be summer break but when school starts back up they’ll be job sharing! It’ll be one week on and one week off from Tuesday-Tuesday I believe. They’re also going to share a daycare spot. I think it’s really neat!

In my research into flexible jobs for when we have a LO one day, one option that really appeals to me is job sharing. Basically you and another person both work part-time, sharing one full-time position. You also share salary & benefits, so if you work 50% of the time, you get 50% salary, 50% vacation, etc.

Obviously this would work better for some jobs and not at all for others, but I think there are positions in my field where this could work well. It could even be a benefit to the employer, as the job sharers can arrange to cover each other's vacations and that sort of thing.

Have you ever heard of this or know anyone who does it?
