No and, although I wouldn't stop someone if they slipped up and told me, I don't want to know. One of my coworkers tries to get me to tell her all the time, really sly comments/questions that she thinks will make me spill my salary. But, I refuse to talk about that shiz with my coworkers. I think it creates unnecessary drama (unless you obviously have to see that on payroll, etc). But just to talk about it? No thanks.

I know exactly what everyone at my job makes because I have to look at payroll sometimes for expense reporting for our government contracts. But we are a small company so there's no jealousy or tension about it--I think all of us should be making a lot more!

Yeah, I could roughly guess. I work in a union environment, so the job grade is published for every position, and then you get steps for how long you've been in the position.

Thank you @Katrocap: ! It's a big change for me (I've been in public school for 7 years), but I'm welcoming the challenge - and the tuition break for our son! My last district sounds a lot like yours, with the different salary system. I liked it, but it was only in the beginning stages. Do you like yours?

@joyfulkiwi: Congratulations on your new job!

@renee: I'm often uncomfortable about discussing pay with coworkers, but you make a good point about gender equality and salary transparency.

I'm a teacher and a few years ago all school district employee salaries were published in the paper. My district did away with annual steps around that time and now pay raises are based on a combination of evaluations and PDs attended, so it's not as easy to figure out what other people make.

I don't know, but I'm curious. We have a pay grade, so I know the range that people of my level are within, but it's a fairly large range, so I'm definitely curious where people are. I think that knowledge could be useful when trying to negotiate a raise or a promotion! I'd especially like to know how valued I am in the company compared to my peers.

Not exactly, but I know most of them make less than me. I've worked in several school districts with public pay scales like others have said. My last district did away with the grade-step scale, so no one really knew unless they asked.

I just got hired at a Montessori preschool. I basically named my salary, so the director asked me not to share how much I'm making since I'm at the top of the pay range (which is where the teachers who've been there 10 years are and I'm brand new).

A couple... I know that the girl who started the same time as me (with less experience and less education) makes more because A. she already received a promotion and B. her annual review was "more positive" than mine, even though nothing negative was said in mine. I have nothing against her personally and I'm happy she's made such incredible progress so soon into her career... but it does make me question why she has advanced so quickly and I haven't.

I also know what one other coworker makes because we were friends before she became my coworker, and recently started, so she makes significantly less.

Yes, I'm a teacher and there is a step-and-column for our pay based on education level and years of teaching experience. So I have a general sense what people make at my school.

I think it's important to be able to discuss you pay in workplaces where it is not transparent. Women are often the victims of getting paid less, and how can that change if we don't know salaries?

There are some data on average salaries at different levels that are available. From that, I believe I'm at the high end for my level, but I'm not 100% sure. I like having at least the average broken down by gender available, since there can be pretty significant pay disparities between men and women in the same profession.

No but I will say in my previous job I had access to everyones salary because of my position and it was eye opening in terms of the disparity between men and women for the same job with the same experience. It was surprising as it is a large organization but not surprising in the sense of how women who went on maternity leave could kiss promotions goodbye etc.
it was a very disappointing experience.

Roughly. I work for the government and we have a grade-and-step scale so I can make a pretty good guess based on how long they have been working here. I don't care about exact numbers, though, because this setup makes it pretty hard to have big pay disparities amongst similar positions.
