@artbee: Wow! Yea that would be really cool if i could find out info one day. It's always an interesting feat when I go to a new doctor and they ask about family health history. (my mom is an only child, and she never met her dad before). So I always tell my doctors. I don't know anything! hahaha

I used the ancestry.com free trial and found my family history back to 1800. I did my husband's too. I really wanted to find family names to use for our future children. One of my great great grandfathers was named Wiseman!

@MrsBrewer: That would be so neat if you could find that info! My husband has been trying to find information on his mom's side forever because his mom always thought one women was her grandma, but she found out when she was older that it was her stepgrandma. They have little info about her actual grandma, but I have faith he'll find it all someday. He's pretty amazing with that stuff.

Sadly, I can't really look into my family history. My dad was adopted, and we know his birth mother, but not his birth father (his mom doesn't remember his name.....) and on my mom's side of the family, her grandmother (my great grandmother) was adopted and has no information on that.

@artbee: I just started by putting in me and my husband and our parents and grandparents. From there, it gives you "hints" from public records like census data, birth/marriage/death records, and other people's family trees that contain the same people.

@lovelife: How fun!

@meaganceleste: For some reason I just don't get how to use it.... or at least as well as my husband. I tried, but he ended up just taking over. He loves it though, and I like him doing the work and then telling me the fun things he finds :)

Ancestry.com is such a great resource, I started playing with it using their free trial and took mine and my husband's family back several generations just using the data they had available!

I know very little about both sides of my family. I don't think it would be too terrible to start looking into my mom's side, but my father died when I was young and I have never known any of his family at all. His parents were dead before I was born and he was an only child. Also, my mother's real birth father abandoned them when she was an infant, so blood-wise, I'd never know anything about that part of her family.

My husband has a huge genealogy book, though, and it's pretty fascinating. I'm pretty jealous of how much his family has recorded and saved over the generations.

Kinda. My mom's family all grew up in my hometown (on the same street actually) for about 4 generations back. Before that, we know that my grandmother's great grandparents came from Denmark. My distant cousin (who is really into genealogy) researched and found some Danish relatives on facebook!! Pretty cool. This means I had to teach my mom how to copy/paste and use an online translator so she could read their facebook posts lol.

However, I don't know much about my Dad's family since I'm not too close to them. DH knows a lot about his family. Don Knotts (Barney from the Andy Griffith Show) was his grandfather's cousin! I always thought that was the coolest thing ever when we were dating.

I would have to find it, but one of my uncles did a ton of research into our family tree on my mom's side, so I have a booklet that has all my ancestors for generations. It's VERY cool. Just wish I had something similar for my dad's side of the family!

My husband is very into genealogy, he's even trying to become a certified genealogist just for funsies. He's gone way back into his faimly tree, and also into mine. He knows more about my family then I do! He also talks to random distant cousins that I've never heard of to see if he can get more info from them. It's neat learning about new people that we're related to, there's all sorts of weird stories.
