My Hungarian family eats something that looks just like that, with poppyseed filling, but calls it something else. I can't think of the name right now.

@MamaG: Yes! Ours was more of a crumb cake, too... apple, cherry. Kuchen is a big tradition on my mother's (German) side.

Yes, Kuchen = cake, but we always had more like a crumb cake with fruit as a Kuchen. What you describe sounds more strudel like to me. But regardless of what you call it, it sounds yummy.

We often have kuchen at church potlucks, along with other German dishes! Gotta love those German Lutherans!

As a German I can tell you that kuchen is the German word for cake. We see these types of cakes/pastries often here.

My husbands family makes it. I'm positive it's a German dish. I have never tried ito but my husband loves it. I'm not big on pastry in general.

@MrsBrewer, @t.h.o.u. This is a picture of what ours looks like. A Google search says it is a German nut strudel. Makes sense because my Grandmother's ancestry is German. So maybe it's a German thing and not a midwest thing. :)

We have an old family recipe for what we call kuchen. Everyone in my family loves it but everyone who marries-in is skeptical about it at first. It's a rolled pastry with nuts or poppyseed filling in it. We eat it for breakfast (or any time of day) but it is great with coffee.
