We don't know any of ours, really-- just talk to the neighbor who lives on our right. A younger family just moved in across the street before the holidays and we never introduced ourselves. Now it seems like too little, too late if we went to welcome them to the neighborhood.

We moved here a little over a year ago, and no one said hi to us when we first moved, either... So I guess we're sticking with the "tradition."

We know our neighbors in our condo building pretty well. Since it's a small building, all of us pretty much know each other and call when there's a problem or loud noise. I'd say that we all coexist pretty well in our building.

We moved into our current home in Sep'10 and since it was a new development, we got to know a few of our neighbors when we took evening walks around the neighborhood. But we are closest to our next door neighbors and have had dinners together a couple of times and invited each other over for various gatherings. As she is also a nursing mom, she made special soup and gave me some too!

That's the only thing I dislike about our neighborhood, is we aren't very close with our neighbors. We have talked with a few of them on occasions, but nothing that I would feel comfortable going over and asking a favor from.

The one we actually knew the best just sodl their house and are moving, the other couple is in the process of trying to sell. However my DH's best friend lives just down the block (and did before we moved) so we really enjoy that!

We don’t really know our neighbors, which is how we like it. There is an older, retired couple a few houses down and the man likes to chat with my husband if they both are outside in warmer months – I’ve never met either of them.

Our new neighbors across the street are nice, and we talk about our cats sometimes, and wave if we see them. Our next door neighbors are a group of revolving renters who are always shady and annoying and lazy, so we don’t like them and we ignore them/they ignore us. There is an in-home daycare 2 houses up from us and they HATE us, though I don’t know exactly why (they always give the stink eye and have ignored my “hello” and waving). They apparently (according to the nice neighbors) think we are yuppies, which, we are. So, naturally, we hate them back and ignore them LOL

We know our neighbors across the street, behind us, and next door on both sides. To say we're friends? No-- we're the youngest couple in our sub and our work/school schedules never align with the neighborhood hangout sessions.

DH has met a few more of the neighbors down the street than me while working outside, etc.--- but there's a gaggle of 40 year old women that are the "desparate hw" of our street and I refuse to be friends with them (they gossip about every family).

My best friend lives a few miles away and all of my in town close friends are within a 20 min drive... so I don't really see a gap.

@artbee: very true. it is super quiet around here. but sometimes i think it would be nice to have more young families around. my friends are only 5-10 minute away, though, so it's fine.

We know the names of the people in the houses on either side of us. We wave at some neighbors when they drive by. We don't socialize with any of them. Some I have found to be cliquish, which really irks me. Like, if you don't have kids, you can't be friends wih them. Some are just odd. My husband is very shy and not a big socialize so I'm sure people think he is odd, as well though....

We do the same like Crumbs above. I know who they are and they know who we are, but we don't socialize. We say hello but that's about it. That is pretty typical for where I live, though, so it doesn't bother me.

When I lived in NYC and Hoboken, though, it was totally different.

Most of my neighbors are retired. Our 88 yr old next door neighbor is pretty nice, he and DH likes to chat sometimes and he welcomed DH into the neighborhood early on by inviting him to drink some whiskey at his house with another neighbor. Hehe. There's a language barrier so I don't do much talking but the little old lady across the street introduced herself to me and we were able to understand each other.

There's a nice retired couple that's not so old and they're very talkative (and speak English fluently). The other next door neighbor we usually only chat with when we're both outside gardening. They're more our age with a house full of children so they're really busy.

Basically, we all keep to ourselves but are friendly and chit-chat a bit in passing. It works for us =)

We live in a pretty small development of homes (maybe 15 houses) and I know 7 of my neighbors. We just moved into our house a little over a year ago so I try and go introduce myself whenever I see someone outside. I love my next door neighbors because they own a Thai restaurant and give us a discount when we go to their place to eat...also we exchange Christmas gifts and they brought over a gift for our baby after she was born.

We know our immediate and cul de sac neighbors ... except for one family; they are kind of shady? Our neighbors to our left are really awesome, they always give out Christmas pastries. Their daughter lives across the street w her husband and daughter.

Our neighbors to our right are a bit more standoffish, but they are nice. They make us feel safer, lol, because they call the cops when something strange is going on. We know this because they called the cops when we were moving in because they thought the house was still vacant and hadn't seen our moving truck that morning. LOL.

Here in tokyo, it's customary to give your new neighbors a small present when you move into your new place. So when we moved into this place, we made sure to give all of our neighbors a small gift and note of introduction.

When I was growing up, we knew all our neighbors because they were all family. A majority of my mom's family lives on the same road...her brother, sister, parents, aunts, uncles, etc. This actually is really tough because my family has a hard time with the fact that I live an hour away now...you'd think that I moved across the country!

DH and I currently live in a house in the middle of 3 fields...so we don't really have neighbors. But no, we don't know the people who live in the houses closest to us.

Growing up we were very close with most of our neighbors, and still are. We do holidays, vacations, etc together. When I moved in with my husband he was very friendly with his neighbors. There was a small courtyard and everyone was always out walking their dogs so everyone became friends. We still go back and visit them.

But we've moved, and now we barely know our neighbors. I hate it, but I'm too shy to do anything about it.
