@Amelieisme: Better safe than sorry, I would think!

ETA: I would think as long as the coals are dying down (no longer sparking) that would be safe, as pp have said!

@Amelieisme: My parents do because they have a wood-burning stove/insert. I would avoid leaving an open hearth burning, though. Also, either way, I would make sure to have chimneys cleaned yearly, since chimney fires are scary!

I was just wondering this a couple of hours ago!! We build a fire like 3 times a year, but I never know what to do with it, exactly. We always soak an outside fire with the hose before going inside for the night, and will go to bed with low burning embers in the fireplace. I wasn't sure if that was the norm.

If there isn't active flames we wwould always kind of spread the coals out flat so the heat isn't building if that makes sense & leave it. By we I mean my parents when I was a kid. It was always fine

No, we don't like to leave it unattended. We'll leave it if it's pretty much going out but we're careful not to add wood as it gets later in the evening.

For those with a wood burning fireplace,do you let the fire burn out and go to bed? My DH and I do this but I worry it's a fire hazard. My parents would have never done this, but they are pretty extreme risk averse people. DH thinks it's okay to leave it, but it sort of worries me so I was wondering, what is the norm??
