I was a mommies helper to a neighbor with newborn twins when I was 12. He husban worked late so I would go over there after school and help play with the babies while she showered or made dinner. Then we would feed the babies give them a bath and put them to bed together. I made a bit of cash and she wa right there the whole time. It was great training for me and a big help for her.

@HabesBabe: I actually started babysitting when I was younger. I just played with the kids though. Can you imagine a 6 year old watching a 3 year old and a 1 year old? -.-
Desperate times called for desperate measures..
It's a miracle people didn't call CPS on my aunt and uncle. I remember walking to the local liquor store with the kids to buy candy and snacks. Yikes!

@chopsuey119: damn, 8 years old?! that's legit... or child labor. HA!

I would def be comfortable with the older kids holding the baby, and would just keep my eye on the 9 year old.

I started babysitting when I was 8 years old. Would feed, bathe, and put babies down for their naps. If I trust the teenager/child I'd let them hold my LO.

I was babysitting newborns at 12, and holding babies earlier than that. I think it would depend on the kid holding the baby, but I wouldn't be too worried. I think having them sit on the floor is a great idea!

I might supervise a 9 year old but I think most 13/14 year olds are perfectly capable of holding a baby.

I would say that between 12 and 14 they are old enough to stand and hold a baby with an adult standing there. Under that I agree I would ask them to sit and hold the baby.

What about having them sit on the floor with the baby in their lap sitting up? That way the baby is stimulated with toys on the floor (less likely to squirm) and if they do squirm away they are already on the floor.

Thanks for your opinions.. I don't think it would be a big deal to me if she was older.. but shes still a bobble head! :)

My babysitter has teenage kids (14 and 16). They and their friends hold our 8 month old all the time. I was baby sitting at 12 so it isn't as big a deal. Of course, if they weren't responsible that may be a different story.

Teenagers are definitely old enough to hold a baby. Especially is there is an adult there to keep an eye on them.

I have 3 sisters.... 9, 13,14... and I'm not sure how comfortable I am with them handling the baby. It wasn't so bad when she was a newborn and didn't really move but now she is so squirmy, and only likes to sit up straight or stand. Before I always had them all sit down. I think I would be comfortable with the oldest walking with baby... but the other two aren't aware of their surroundings enough/ don't pay attention to detail( the way baby is moving, where they are walking..etc)..and Baby will not be happy "laying" in their arms, since she doesn't like to be held that way anymore.

This weekend we will be around another 14 year old, 8 and 10 year old... plus my 3 sisters.

Who would you let hold the baby?
