I often wonder how I will approach this when our baby is born, I am an NICU nurse, so I am super conscious about babies and germs, I would think at a minimum people will have to wash/sanitize their hands before holding the baby, and I will probably throw a blanket over their clothes.

I don't like people holding Eli at all. If they do, I make sure they washed their hands and I put a receiving blanket over them before placing Eli on them lol. And definitely no sick people.

I'm relatively liberal with this. Unless you're a complete stranger I allow you to hold my daughter. I try to have people wash their hands prior but I don't always enforce it. Also I don't let people hold her if they are sick.

I don't mind other people holding him, and so far it has been limited to just family members and friends. I wouldn't let a stranger hold him. If I could do things differently, I would make sure to have some Purell on hand during the first month to ensure that everyone had clean hands. It was hard to keep track if everyone had washed their hands.

I don't have a baby yet, but when I do - that baby is staying in a sling or wrap, or in a carseat with a peep cover at all times when around non-immediate family. There will be no holding my infants unless you are our parents or siblings and are not sick, and with hands washed. Call me paranoid.

No. My son is a preemie and anyone who does hold him has to wash their hands thoroughly. Now that flu season is beginning, I'll be even more strict about it. An if it's a disgusting person, no amount of hand washing will give them holding privileges.

Ha! I'm like Blush!nk. I let total strangers hold my baby if they ask nicely. Now, fingers in the mouth? Notsomuch. I recently went to my high school homecoming, and ran into a friend of mine, who had lost his dad a week before to a tragic misdiagnosis of cancer that had gone unnoticed for months, and then they found out when he only had a week to live. It was such a tragic experience. He was there with his new wife, and his mom, and she asked to hold Charlie. It was crazy, she was so cranky with other people, but when I handed her over to my friend's mom, she settled down and fell asleep. She held her for nearly an hour. The next day, my friend's wife emailed me to tell me what an impact it had on her MIL. It helped ease a little of her grief. I'm so glad that sharing Charlie and the miracle of new life helped give someone else hope.

Anyway, I know that's an extreme circumstance, but just think about the fact that holding a newborn can lift someone's spirits and make their day a little brighter. Sorry for the heavy ;)

Like @Jenna I'm sure I'll probably change my mind when we have kids but right now I think that close friends and family are good as long as they wash their hands first.

I let people hold my daughter as long as they wash their hands...The thing is, not many people actually want to hold her anyway! Many of my friends think she's still too little (2 months) to be held so they rather stare at her while I hold her, which is fine by me!

It depends. I'm a huge germa-phobe to begin with and have noticed that people rarely offer to wash their hands before holding Em. So I rarely let people who are not family hold her.

I let pretty much anyone hold Mavi. I think its because i wanted him to get used to being held by other people than me. Plus a germs never hurt anyone :)

I've loosened up a bit, but we still don't let many people hold DD. I just find it weird, unless you are a family member or close friend. We've had random strangers, acquaintances, and co-workers ask before, and I just tell them that she's going through a clingy phase and will probably cry if I try to hand her over. She's been "going through a clingy phase" for 15 months, but no one seems to have noticed...

This is one of those things that may change once the time actually comes, but unless it's a complete stranger, I don't think I'll mind people holding our babies. I'll use my discretion, of course, but for most people I know who would actually want to hold him/her, I don't think it will bother me : )

haha! Well said.
I plan to my close friends and family hold her, bc none of them are filthy and disgusting and they know better than to hold a baby without washing their hands, but outside of that--no go.

Magic 8-ball says: no. But I don't enforce my rule as much as I would like at this point.

But for newborns, I believe strongly that people are filthy disgusting things covered in germs and that they shouldn't be touching little babies unless they've basically scrubbed in for surgery. Then it's ok.

Do you let other people hold your baby?
