DD used to LOVE sleeping on her tummy on me. now i couldn't get her to nap that way even if i wanted her too. but we have woken up to look at the monitor and see her on her side. I agree, whatever works best for you. I think as long as they have good head/neck control they are fine

I started letting my LO sleep on her tummy when she could hold her head really well and do a mini push up, around two months. Now she sleeps on her tummy full time but can roll both ways, so sometimes she wakes up on her back.

My 4 month old has slept on his belly since around 8 weeks. He had terribly painful reflux and it was one of the only things that helped him. Can't say I haven't lost a lot of sleep from it, but luckily he just learned to roll to his tummy, so I feel a little more confident in him sleeping that way.

My 4 month old baby sleeps on her belly and has been doing so for over 2 months now. From the little research I've done it seems that most babies have a preference for belly sleeping because it soothes their tummies, controls startle reflex that wakes them up and also reduces the instances of reflux. My husband is west african and in their culture babies are very often put on their bellies to sleep although they are usually under closer supervision rather than sleeping in their own room

If you don't swaddle, I would try that. I recommend the Miracle Blanket to EVERYONE! My LO hated being swaddled during the day, but loves it at night. Once she hit 10 weeks I started letting her nap on her tummy, and she still sleeps swaddled on her back at night.

I found this a few weeks ago; it's supposed to put pressure on their tummies that mimics sleeping on their belly. They have a swaddle version and an arm's free version:

Try having him sleep in a rock n play (by fisher price) - being on an angle can be more comfortable than laying flat on the back, from our experience. Mine also preferred his stomach and now that he's a little older (3 mos) and can roll to his tummy himself, I let him stay that way once he rolls in his crib. Before then, we did a lot of naps with him laying on my or my DH's chest.

1) You can't spoil a baby at 5 weeks.
2) A baby shouldn't sleep on his tummy until he can get himself out of it. By this I mean rolling.
3) Babies establish the length of time they sleep. My 13wk old, sleeps one 4hr stretch and then is up every 2hrs still. This may not happen to you, but ya never know

Now with all of this said, you have to do what makes you comfortable. I co-bed. I never thought in a million years that I would do this, but lord it's the only way that I get any sleep. My LO has also slept on his side facing me since birth, using my breast as a pillow. He does roll onto his tummy sometimes and I let him stay there. However, he can roll over and get himself out of it, but he also sleeps with blankets on him. Each Mom has to do what is right for them and their baby.

Have you tried swaddling him? We used to swaddle our LO, and then put a rolled up blanket on either side of her to keep her snug and in the same spot. She seemed to like it.

My baby is currently 5 weeks old, and he has always preferred sleeping on his stomach (like his daddy, I suppose!) I've spent most nights sitting and holding him upright stomach-to-stomach, letting him sleep on my stomach while I was able to lay down, and recently, I've just plain put him down on his tummy. He's still not a great sleeper because I still have to hold him for most of the night, but sometimes, miraculously, we'll get 3 whole hours of sleep from him! Supposedly we can't spoil a newborn, but it's coming up to that time when he can potentially be spoiled, and I was just wondering if there were any methods to get him to sleep on his back! (And sleep longer too - but one issue at a time here!) =P Do you think this is something he will just grow out of? What did you do about your tummy sleeper? I think my baby has good head control, but still! What with all the back-sleeping talk, it's hard not to be concerned.
