Never thought twice about this! We just got a sandbox and it has a cover, so I'm not concerned with animals getting in it, but I guess I don't understand how it's different from playing in beach sand?

A few nice tips...baby powder gets sand off really easily, so we always use that anytime LO plays in the sand, and a half cup of cinnamon mixed in with the sand keeps bugs out.

Our kids love sandboxes. Ours is covered and I saw a tip to mix 1 cup of cinnamon into the sand to keep bugs and critters out! I just got cinnamon at costco to mix in ours.

There are sandboxes at every playground near us, lo loves them! I just try to keep her from eating it all, haha. Our ped joked that it's good for her to eat some dirt/sand though to build up immunities!

I was never allowed to play in sandboxes, and never knew why. I asked my mom, and she said I got impetigo from playing in a sandbox. It's apparently worse than ringworm. The doctors said kids get it from cats and animals peeing in the sandboxes. I was 15 months old, very contagious, and had to stay home for 10 days on antibiotics.

It's always grossed me out too.
1. I hate the mess and how it sticks to everything.
2. Unless they have a cover, they seem like a big litter box that neighborhood animals poop in.
3. Ring worm.

We have a sandbox in our backyard, it's the covered plastic monstrosity sort it works great.

Considering we have one at home, it makes my son a lot less curious when we go to a playground and there's a sandbox. Those public ones, I agree are gross.

I loathe sandboxes, but they are in every public playground here, so they can't be avoided. I mostly hate them for the mess because you just can't get rid of sand. That said, I also don't prevent my kids from playing in them. My son used to be able to play in the sandbox for 2 solid hours while I sat on a park bench and watched. Luckily, all the parks also have fountains, so you can at least rinse everyone and everything off when they are done.

We have a sandbox with a cover so I obviously have no issues with it! DD2 sometimes eats a bit of sand but so be it, she'll eventually learn not to eat it at all...I hope! As for bugs, we dumped a container of cinnamon in it and it works decently well at keeping bugs out, with the added bonus of smelling like Cinnabon every time we open it!

@photojane: yeah, growing up by the beach, sand at every playground, (although we don't have a sandbox at our house) i wouldn't even think this is an issue!

until moving to another town, i thought every playground had sand, but some here have wood chips. is that what other people have by them?

We have a turtle sandbox with a cover at home, but she also plays in the uncovered sandboxes at the park. And, obviously she plays in the sand at the beach. She eats sand covered sandwiches every time we go to the beach. Whatever.

Take a box of table salt with and mix it in with the sand. It'll discourage bugs.

I say you enjoy the peace and quiet associated with happy kids playing in sand and have a drink. Our sand box keeps our girl happier than an iPad does!!

Like other posters above, this is a non issue to me. One of those things I never thought about! I'm not too concerned about it so long as my kids aren't shoveling their mouths full of sand. A few pieces here and there though? Oh well.

above all else, I just HATE having sand in everyone's shoes/diapers/underwear (ok, the last two just apply to the kids, but I HATE SAND IN MY SHOES). And I'm with you that it's gross.

I don't prohibit sandbox play, but I definitely don't encourage it. The annoying thing is some of the toddler sections of playgrounds around here are surrounded in sand. ugh! I am so annoyed at the person who decided that would be a good idea.

Last week we were on vacation with my in-laws and DD1 "discovered" a pony in the sandbox. MIL let her bring it home (ewww) but gave it a bath in hot water and soap before letting DD have it. I'm afraid this is going to make DD1 more excited about sand than ever (buried treasure, right!?)
