You wouldn't happen to be my neighbor would you? I live in a culdesac too and my neighborhood kids are always outside in front of my house on bikes and little scooters and gocarts. I love that they are outside but hate that our road is sooo busy. It makes me nervous because no one's watching them. There's a baby in diapers out there and his brother has to drag him to a yard when cars come

No, unless they are friends or they had specifically asked permission. It's a liability - they can sue if they get hurt on your property. DH's family often had to ask kids to leave their yard in the snow, as they have a nice hill for sledding - a hill that ends in their sliding glass door. I bet it would be a nightmare to deal with if a kid hit that! My family had the same problem. They own a farm and for some reason people see large amounts of land and just assume "It's like a park! I can walk my dog/play with my kids/ride my ATV/ hunt here!" No, you can't. It's private property. And let's not even get started on people wandering through the woods in hunting season. That's trespassing AND a real safety hazard.

We have some kids across the street who do that. Drives me bonkers! Especially when they hit DH's car with their balls, they leave slurpie cups in the street, on our sidewalks, etc. We never grew up playing in other yards unless we were playing with those kids, so I'll definitely teach my LO the same.

I don't mind if they ride in our driveway (we have a big circular one) but I do not like kids in my yard. I don't know why it bothers me, but I thinks it's mainly because we have one neighbor kid who doesn't understand that just because we let you play in our yard, does in no way mean you can start playing on our porch or walk into our house. We finally had to get ugly with him after asking nicely to only play in the driveway or yard. He was literally walking around our house knocking on our windows.

I feel like this is one of those "when I was your age...." Things!

I grew up on a cul-de-sac and played in the neighbors yards. We used to cut through their yards to get to our friends houses on another street. Neighborhood kids did the same. No one ever seemed to mind!

Papa Jumper and I live in a housing plan filled with families and kids of all ages, but everyone is mindful of their own space.

Maybe I'm a scrooge but if I wasn't friendly with them then that would make me uncomfortable. It just seems sort of rude of the parents to let the kids do that, plus I do always worry about liability, but I don't know if I would say anything, mostly because I'm a wuss about some things.

@Bookworm: Ah that makes sense. How annoying about non-inclusive neighbors. Hopefully when you're walking around the block with a newborn they'll come out and meet you!

I agree with you. I would be uncomfortable if kids that I didn't know were playing in my yard/driveway. I'd also be worried about them getting hurt and someone saying it was your fault.

I let LO play in the yard to the right of us because we are friendly with them. If they come outside they're always excited to see LO and come talk to us. They give her hand me down toys from their grandchildren.

I don't let her play in the yard to the left (nor does she really try to... I guess she just knows) even though we know them but they just aren't as friendly towards LO. I don't think they'd be happy with it.

@hummusgirl: Yeah, I wish it was like that! I don't think it would bother me nearly as much if I knew my neighbors. Problem is (and I posted about this in a thread earlier today), the neighbors aren't very friendly/including. Maybe after LO comes we will get to know them better and it won't bother me at all!

I understand why you feel that way but it wouldn't bother me. I really hope someday to live in a neighborhood where kids ride their bikes and play together outside, and the parents know each other and have block parties. It sounds idyllic to me!

No...I think it's rude to be in someone's yard or driveway without permission. DH and I even hate having to turn around in someone's driveway. Especially since I don't even know them. And, what if they got hurt in your driveway? Some crazy parents could actually sue.

Our house is at the end of a cul-de-sac with a long, sloped driveway. The neighbor kids seem to love it for riding their scooters and tricycles down....but it makes me uncomfortable! I do not know my neighbors well, and don't know their kids (young ones, ages 3-7) at all, and I just find it weird that they traipse all over my driveway and sometimes my lawn. DH says I'm being silly, and I am glad that they are outside playing instead of inside lazing about, but I don't know, it irks me :p

So, tell me, what do YOU think is acceptable? I haven't said anything to the kids or parents because I'm probably being silly (and because I hate conflict :p), but I do worry about safety/liability.
