She does but I get nervous when she runs in circles through the kitchen, dining and living rooms. I'm not so worried when we're in her room contained - then she likes to hide and have me chase her ;)

@Sarac: I'm sorry to hear that. It must have been a difficult way to grow up. My dad encouraged me in everything I did - he was the one to teach me and my little brother to play baseball and ice hockey, and we also spent lots of time "helping" him fix things around the house. As I said, my mom just wanted me to wear dresses and be a lady - whatever that means. Consequently, I have a much better relationship with my dad.

But not everyone was so accepting, i.e. my hockey coaches, which included my mom's brother. I felt a lot of anger and resentment towards them for almost 20 yrs, and it took a lot to get over that. Now in my 30s, I still play, whereas, many of my male teammates frol back then do not! Anyway, because of all of this, I feel very strongly in encouraging all kids to run, be active, and play sports. Just a little worried about the running on slippery floors,

@Astro Bee: No, it was because they were chronically ill, overwhelmed, and stressed out by the demands of an active child. I do suspect that they would have seen a boy's energy as more 'natural' and more deserving of an outlet, but since I was a girl, they felt fine just telling me to stop, period.

Clearly, I'm pretty angry about this. I totally understand not letting a child run around where they're going to fall, or near stairs, or whatever. But I do think that girls are disproportionately not allowed to run around and be active, and I think it really, really sucks.

@Sarac: Was it because of your gender that they didn't want you to run or be boisterous? When I was a little girl, my mom would admonish me to "be a lady," but I rebelled by becoming a big tom boy, hanging out with the neighbourhood boys (the only other girl in my area moved away), and playing hockey.

I think kids need to blow off steam no matter their gender, but I'm not sure how I'll handle the running in the house issue when it comes up. Our hardwood floors can be slippery.

Absolutely. I was not allowed to run as a child, not for any concern for my safety, but more because my parents didn't like to see me being loud and active and boisterous. Yeah, that's as bad as it sounds. They did an excellent job of raising me to be absolutely sedentary, and I've spent my adult life trying to reverse that damage. It makes me furious to think that no matter how hard I work at it, I'll probably never have the kind of core strength and muscle that my 3 year old daughter already has.

So yeah, my daughter runs, jumps, screams, etc in the house. Usually all at once. I won't be making the mistakes that my parents did.

For sure! We are trapped inside a bit with the weather and LO needs to get her energy out. Mostly it is just around in circles in her room as a game, though, or back and forth in there.

Yes! He needs to burn his energy on the days it's too cold to go outside. We have an open concept main floor so we don't have many falls/hazards. Every night we play "freeze." Essentially, he runs around like a mad man until I say "freeze." We play until he's worn out!

I remember when I was young I was always told not to run or jump in the house. I guess I can understand why since it could cause an injury, but I'm currently letting my toddler run, yell and jump from the living room to the hall to the kitchen and through the dining room. She's burning energy from being stuck inside ;) LO2 thinks it's hilarious so it's entertainment for her, too!

Am I the only one that allows my LO to run around the house?
