@Mrs. Pen: I'm a SAHM until 5pm, when I go to school. And still, we don't allow any TV viewing, computer time, playing with my iPhone or watching videos, any of that.

@Mrs. Pen: I'm a SAHM and my LO does not get any screen time...she is 14 months. But I am lucky that the weather where we live is super mild...rains a lot but not super cold. So we get out of the house at least once a day...usually twice a day. We go for a lot of walks or run errands together. Also I'm super lucky that my parents live close by and we go visit them once a week or they come visit us. My neighbor also has young kids so we go over there sometimes. I would probably go crazy if I couldn't get out of the house for 10 hours everyday. Totally understandable that you need a break and use tv to get some time to yourself

@Mrs. Pen: Amen, sistah.

I let LO watch limited amounts of certain shows -- Sesame Street, Thomas, Super Why, the baby channel. No crazy cartoons or anything. It can be invaluable while I'm trying to prepare his meals or need to do something without being whined at/climbed on/etc. I do try to limit it to a half hour a day. Though I'll totally admit he watched a bit more today because it was sleeting/snowing and nasty, so we were stuck inside.

I've chosen not to feel bad about this, either. I read to that kid so much every day, take him on outings constantly, play with him plenty, etc etc etc. Sometimes a mama needs a breather, and that kid loves his Thomas ;)

We try to avoid it but I do have it on sometimes in the background for me. When its on and shes on her play mat my LO will sometimes try to roll onto her tummy to get a better look (4.5 months). She looks kind of funny straining to see the screen lol.

None for the baby, I'm pretty firm on the no tv for under 2 rule. TG watches zoo animal clips while I brush out her curls, because she needs to be distracted, it's not a fun job. She also gets movies if she's sick or occasional nature shows with dad. Not a ton.

I am curious to know whether SAHM's allow more screentime than WOHM's. I think it'd be sooo much easier if I was coming home at 5pm and only have those 3 hours with DS to play with him, and time on the weekends. But I'm with him SO much *I* need stimulation, or a break...

@FutureMrsMcK: yeah I'll sometimes put on my shows, but he doesn't usually watch them. And his youtube playlist is on a lot, and he takes a break from playing every now and then to watch it. but he's past the "tv is a novelty" stage.

Not really, but it's kind of creepy when we put a kids' video on the laptop, her eyes are glued to it. Nothing else can make her sit still and pay attention like that. Sometimes on the weekend we have our stuff on in the background, like sports or something. She doesn't pay too much attention to our TV, so I'm not too worried....

With me if I'm sick or having a horrible day. She won't sit and watch it herself. I would love to be able to put on 20 minutes of sesame street to have a little peace with I eat breakfast, but she could care less.

With me, never. Toddler X is sooooooo active and busy as it is, that I'm adamant that he not be exposed to anything even vaguely linked to hyperactivity. No TV/screen time, no sugar. But also, I just don't know that he would be interested if it were on-- the few times he's been around TVs that were on, he just hasn't been interested.

we use tv as a tool.......havent had to use it for maybe a month, but there have been times that having baby watch tv is the only thing that stops the crying (a preschoolers channel!) and periods where we used it daily

charlie watches videos. usually short clips. once in a while we do let him watch tv (ie if i'm home alone and have to put olive down for a nap), but generally no. also our only tv is in our bedroom which the kids aren't allowed in since it's down a spiral staircase.

My LO is at the point where he couldn't care less about the TV. He is too busy crawling around pulling up on stuff and seeing what he can get into. He is a mess! I wish he would just sit there for 20 minutes and watch TV but he won't!

However when he was younger and first discovered the TV, he loved it!

@Mrs. Pen:/@meredithNYC: Ugh, I'm in the same position. I don't live a quick walk to anything, and the weather has been so miserable.

Full disclosure I have the TV for at least part of the day, but he pays in no mind. I'm talking about specifically putting him in front of the TV with something that interests him on (he likes the animation of the videos). He does great tummy time while he's watching though!

Yes! I've been letting him watch TV once a day since he was 6 months old... I have chosen not to feel guilty about it. Being a SAHM without a car in the freezing days of winter leaves me stumped as to what to do to entertain him ALL day. DH works 10-14 hour days so I do dinner/bath/bed by myself too. It's not fun and I just burn out by 4-5pm. If I let him watch 30-60 minutes of TV I cannot allow myself to feel guilty. He always watch good shows though - I have a youtube playlist with music videos by Laurie Berkner and Elizabeth Mitchell that he watches, as well as 5 Signing Time DVDs.

LO watches Jeopardy every night with us! She doesn't always pay attention. :) Honestly we were trying to limit her screen time and follow the recommendations but we both felt like we could never watch a movie or a TV show. LO doesn't go to bed until 9 p.m. (and this is good seeing as how she used to go to bed at 11!) We've done plenty of evenings with no TV but sometimes Mama and Daddy need a little relaxation, too.
