@sunny: we looove our Amex blue preferred card! The cash back knocks a $50-$100 off our bill each month.

If you look at reviews comparing different credit cards, the Amex blue consistently rates near or at the top.

I have the Amex Blue Cash Everyday card which has no annual fee and has the rewards structure:
-3% back on groceries (cap of up to $6000 spend per year)
-2% back on gas & department stores
-1% back on everything else

If you spend a lot on groceries, you should look into the Blue Cash Preferred card which carries a $75 annual fee. However, the earning rate is 6% on groceries, 3% on gas/dept stores, 1% everything else.

I also have the Costco Amex which has
-3% back on gas
-2% back on travel & dining
-1% back everywhere else
In addition, it also doubles your warranty up to 1 year so I make big/expensive purchases with my Amex... just in case!

Amex also has incredible customer service... I feel like a walking advertisement for them!

Also a big fan of the Starwood card here. My friends- all consultants out of undergrad- analyzed the points/reward yield and Starwood was the best. Maybe that has changed in the last 7 years, but we all love it :)

I like mine. I have the blue card which is fee free. I mainly use it at Costco since they only take AMEX. Costco also has their AMEX card so you just have one card but I never got around to getting it but you get 2% back. I have rewards for my AMEX card so I guess it's not too bad. My husband got two iphones for free through my AMEX rewards. :)

We love our Starwood AMEX too... definitely took advantage of all the hotel points we racked up by using it on staycations.

My personal favorite card is our Discover though.

@lemondrop: We use our Amex for gas and groceries, probably 1./2 the time, and still ended up with over $100 in cashback in February. It was pretty awesome. Plus, they usually offer that if you don't get $50 cashback, they'll refund you $50.

@mrsjyw: i have a Starwood Amex. I loooove it. I saved up all my points and our honeymoon hotel rooms were entirely paid for. Like @MaisyMay: I use it at Costco. We pay it off every month, though, and have it for emergencies.

@mrsmate: I agree that the amex customer service is outstanding!

I heard the rewards were really good. Everytime I go to Costco and see their Amex card, I think we should get it. It's nice that as long as you keep up with your Costco membership there are no fees.

DH had the platinum for a while....while the fee was absurd the perks were equally as absurd, in a good way! we ultimately switched to amex blue which has no fee and we are super happy with it. Haven't had any issues with places not accepting amex.

The fee is a lot but we use way more than that in benefits each year. For instance when a retailer gives you a hard time about returns, they make it so easy to dispute the charge (although I try to be careful about not abusing this), and you get a certain amount refunded each year if airlines charge you fees.

the traditional amex card is a charge card that you pay off monthly. we don't use ours because of the annual fee to activate.

we just use our visas with rewards and pay that off every month.
