I just wanted to get married. We only had a wedding because my husband wanted one. Because I had to fly home for the bridal shower, and would have had to for the baby shower, guests were limited to small sized gifts and/or money in a card. And not to be crass, but the amount of money I spent on my plane ticket did not cover what monetary gifts I received. Anyway, the point of the shower from my perspective was allowing my mother to act as mother of the bride for once (I'm her only daughter). I also didn't share her interests growing up, so it was a small price to pay. Just a painful one! I hated my own bridal shower, but only agreed to it because my Mom was so excited. We played every single game that I despised so much. My Mom agreed with me that no one likes going, but that this was her time to host. Ugh!</p> <p>When I was pregnant with my first I said there was no way I was flying across the country to have a crappy time and not be able to drink, but if they wanted to organize a co-ed BBQ with no games or gift-opening to celebrate the baby coming I would fly home. Nothing got planned, so I avoided that one. Instead my Mom and MIL co-hosted a non-games, gift-opening family dinner for just the ladies (plus DH's male cousin) on MIL's side (and my Mom) in the town I live in now. It was bearable - barely. No one has suggested anything for this one due in just over a month. I was not, but was drinking water instead of alcohol and apparently people saw that as a give away. Just because the topic of the party is babies, don't ask a random stranger if they are pregnant...actually never ask a woman if she's pregnant, but especially not at a baby shower. Besides that, no objections.
