Not exactly the same but I love “hosting” at our family beach house.

We don’t have a guest room so occasionally people stay on our air mattress in my office. Not my fave but works in a pinch.

We are moving cross country and will need a guest room and I feel good about hosting people there.

I don't really like having people over either. It's a lot of work cleaning everything up to look outsider presentable. Plus, I have my morning routine, and that goes out the window usually when we have people staying overnight.

@Iced Tea: lol that is bananas. I would have said no. But I'm a jerk.

This thread is making me think of those HGTV shows when people are all like "Oh yeah we need an extra bedroom for guests." I'm like, people, if you don't have a room, they can't stay there! Problem solved!

So, you guys will love this.

I had a houseguest who informed us two days prior to arrival that they would require a new mattress since ours was too soft. They paid for two twin mattresses (because they have different preferences, of course) to be delivered to my home, which I had to carry upstairs and find a place for.

Before you tell me I shouldn't have, let me say that it was my in laws who only visit once every few years from overseas. I went along with this INSANITY since the opportunity for my husband and kids to bond with them is so very rare. I still have to laugh though. Who the heck does that?!

Now that we have an actual house, I am ok with friends staying for 1-2 nights max. Without their kids!

We are lucky because our families are all close enough they can come for the day. We actually had the opportunity to move cross country right after our wedding, and I was so stressed about the idea of my ILs coming and insisting on staying with us that I had to shut it down.

@periwinklebee: truth. Think it over. Cause yeah, once there is space (and we still live in the city and don't have much...) they have no problem inviting themselves, disregarding timing that works for the family and making themselves right at home!!

@psw27: Right now we are in a one bedroom condo and are deciding whether we want to stay in the city, get plenty of space in the burbs in exchange for a longish commute, or move to a less urban area altogether. I know this sounds horrible, but thinking about my MIL making extended visits of whatever length she chose (she's very adamant about doing whatever she pleases and expects it culturally) if we had a guest room is making me think that living forever in a tiny city condo may not be such a bad thing :meh:

@Foodnerd81: I skipped Passover when my son was six weeks old because I knew I would not really be able to focus on the seder anyway, and he would obviously not benefit from a seder at that age.

We also skipped Passover this year because it was the best timing for us to go on a nuclear family "babymoon".

My mom was disappointed but she survived. Sometimes it is ok to be selfish.

@Mrsbells: I agree completely - daytime house guests and parties and playdates, I'm all about. It just is the never ending weeks of my in laws who wear shoes in my house and leave used tea bags sitting on my white kitchen counters that make me want to move back into our 2 bed 1 bath with no space for guests. And like @Foodnerd81: my 3 year old is awesome about telling people the rules of the house. But we are 3 weeks out from another week long visit and I'm bracing myself. UGH.

I don't mind, but it doesn't happen very often - maybe once every other year. (Though it might be more in the future now that my inlaws are retired and we're having a baby). BUT I've also never had an issue with (I'm sorry to say) rude guests that cannot follow simple house rules. Our shoes come off at the door, I don't care which one we come in, shoes come off. We eat in the living room, but people have always asked if it's ok to take food outside normal food areas (kitchen/dining room) or asked where we/they should eat. I'm not too worried about having enough or the right food, it's "just family" so that level of formality doesn't concern me... there's always the option to go get more food or take them grocery shopping.

@ElbieKay: my mil lives across the country and baby 2 was due one week before Christmas, so the timing sucked. But I also assumed second babies are always early so figured I’d be settled in already anyway. If I ever had another baby I would make sure we got more alone time, but we are done at two anyway.

@Foodnerd81: Our parents all live 45 mins away (in opposite directions). Both last time and this time they are invited to visit in the hospital once everyone is bonded and stable post delivery. But they are not invited to visit us at home for the first few weeks. I want time for us to settle in as a newly expanded family, and I also need the freedom to learn how to breastfeed without being sequestered in my bedroom. Especially with twins! That goes for both sides of the family, not just my in-laws. It will make zero difference to the babies at that age. They can bond with their grandparents a little later.

@ElbieKay: when we lived in our two bedroom condo it was a different story. Even when people weren’t staying overnight with us they would just be in the living room all day long. MIL, who I like very much, rented an air bnb around the time LO2 was born, and basically we had guests in our condo from like 9 am to 9 pm. With a 2.5 year old and a newborn and a mama who had just given birth and was engorged and leaking and exhausted. Not fun.

I like hosting during the day, and even hosting parties.

I can think of a handful of close friends that I would be ok with hosting overnight for 1-2 nights max. Otherwise HELL NO.

We live in a 3bdrm 2ba 1500sf apartment with only one common area (open plan living room + kitchen). There is nowhere to hide from house guests. (There isn't even anywhere to hide from my son or husband, haha!). So, anyone who I don't know intimately well, to the point where I don't feel like I need to be "on" around them, stresses me out as an overnight guest.---

We've had two experiences where friends of my husband stayed with us. I was miserable (for different reasons each time). Neither is invited back for an overnight stay (and both have solicited invitations).

I feel even more strongly about this now that I am nearing the end of my twin pregnancy. We will have two adults, three children and two cats. That is 300sf per human, and 215sf per creature if you count all seven of us.

I only like my parents staying. That said, we have most of our families stay at our apt at one point or another (our small, cramped apartment)
My mom gets me and she understands my cleaning style and helps unasked
My mother in law thinks she helps and thinks she is a domestic goddess but really she half asses it. Just throws shit in the dishwasher, crystal next to dinnerware and shocking, things break. Uses dirty rags to dry dishes. She folded a load of very very damp laundry and then when I threw it back in the dryer, she legit cried. She always asks to help with things, I explain how it do it, she does it differently so I have to redo it
Sorry that was way off topic

We also live in an apartment with neighbors below and everyone who comes to visit with kids thinks it’s ok to play basketball or drum on the floor or do jumping jacks as their morning workout (even with gentle reminders. Kids and adults. 🤦‍♀️)

@erinbaderin: This made me laugh out loud!@Mrsbells: I do love it but I’m a true extrovert and love sitting around with a glass of wine talking with people - if I can do that in my own home, all the better! We designed and built a townhouse last year specifically to have a gues suite for out of town family and friends.

@ineebee: this is so true, we have had guests be super loud banging tables and yelling during a game which woke up one of my little ones at night.

Before kids, I loved having people over. After having kids and experiencing how hard it is to get kid-less guests with the program in our home, I don’t prefer it. My parents and brother have a hard time remembering to be quieter when kids are sleeping, keeping phones and iPads away, eating at our usual times, etc.

Before kids, I SO loved having overnight guests. It was a fun change, and I loved cooking and enjoying some wine together. In short, I had some time and energy to spare.

Now I don’t, so I get stressed about most overnight guests, especially the kind that are waiting around for me to plan every meal or have no idea how to respect my kids’ schedules. I don’t have the energy for it.
