We used them every night for about the first three months with a swaddle. Made middle of the night diaper changes so much easier. Then we started using a fleece swaddle when the weather got colder, and the gowns have remained in the closet. Like others have said, I'm not finding much use for them in the winter. The ones that ride up are definitely useless though. Next baby I might try a few of the ones pictured above or maybe the magnetic sleepers. I hate snaps but zippers mean you have to expose their trunk for diaper changes. When DD was a newborn, she was just too squishy to get in them easily, and I also found that her legs and feet got chilly in these. My real fail was thinking that she could wear one home from the hospital, but of course we couldn't strap her into a car seat appropriately., so all that effort putting her into it was wasted.
