@hilsy85: you're so right! It's like, "I'm getting coffee...this means I have not yet launched for today. Talk to me *after* my coffee!".

I'd never be rude to anyone, but I never initiate small talk and I never ask open ended questions. Maybe I'll throw in a "I'm fine, how are you?" But usually it's just a "I'm fine, thanks."

I usually get the same guy every time, and he's a runner too so I like to talk to him. He's got a lot of good running wisdom to share. If I get anybody else it depends on what kind of mood I'm in.

I'm typically in a hurry when I'm in a drive thru, so I'd prefer no useless small talk.

I don't only because I'm really bad at making small talk, I feel awkward and never know what to say. I like when I'm going through the drive-thru and the server is pleasant and everything, but to make actual conversation, I kind of clam up. It's my problem, not theirs, though.

I don't really like small talk. I enjoy quiet. I don't like when hairdessers try to talk to me. It might be partly because I'm super shy though

@Dandelion: Awwww... that is really cute! I have no problem being asked how I'm doing, it's when it goes beyond that that I get cranky.

Sometimes I wonder if it's an American/Canadian division. Most Canadians I've talked to about it feel the same way as me, but we're generally known for being quite reserved, private people.

I guess it's totally a personal preference thing though :)

@hergreenapples: See, that's the kind of stuff we liked to hear...something different! But I can understand not really wanting to share it.

One time I asked a customer once how she was doing and she held up her left hand and yelled, "I got engaged last night! You're the first person I've told today!" and I did a giddy happy girly squeal with her, and it was so much fun to share that moment with her. She was just exploding to tell someone, lol.

@hilsy85: Exactly! At least wait until I have some caffeine in me ;)

@Dandelion: Good to have some insight...I figured that was the case in terms of the reasoning behind it. I guess I just feel like the questions they ask often cross the line in terms of what I'm comfortable sharing...I've lied more than once because I simply don't want to share the honest answer (e.g. they asked me what my plans are for the day today...well, I'm going to the hospital to see if I need to be induced....not something I really want to tell the barista I've never met before!).

I used to be a drive thru starbucks barista. This is so that if your order is taking a while, you're not just sitting there, twiddling your thumbs and getting angry at them.

Plus, it breaks up the monotony of working the drive thru all morning. :)

I generally hate small talk with anyone, and especially if I'm trying to get coffee, since I would assume that means I'm feeling tired, or it's early!

I don't know if this happens at all Starbucks, but I assume it's a wider corporate directive that asks the baristas working the drive-thru to make small talk with customers. I get the idea behind it, especially given Starbucks' focus on community, but it drives me nuts!

I'm totally cool with exchanging niceties, but the fact that they've asked me things like: where do you work? what are your plans for the day? where are you headed next? what do you do? etc. just crosses the line with me, and I'm not even a particularly private person!

Am I just a huge grump? Do you like making conversation with the baristas at Starbucks?
