I've steered clear of classes so far. DH is kind of my personal trainer, as he taught me how to use all the machines/weights at the gym and work groups of muscles together. I'd rather have a personal trainer than do something like zumba or yoga. I like fitness autonomy best!

I hate attention on me, so I prefer group. But I think if I'm comfortable with the teacher I'm ok with a private. Tonight only 3 people showed up for our water zumba class because it stormed all day, so it was close to having a private lesson. But the teacher is great, and I did find myself working harder this way.

Mostly group. I've done both though. Depends on the kind of relationship I have with the trainer. The girl at the gym that is a PT used to chat it up with me all the time, but would show me stuff, her intentions were good but she kind of got on my nerves. One of the guys at the gym who trained I felt had more credibility and I felt could give me almost a better workout than in the group classes he taught. So...it's a toss up.

I love both. I had a personal trainer when I lived in LA, and I benefited from it. I'm also a fan of group classes! It's all fun to me. Both motivate me more than when I work out on my own.

I love, love, love my PT (when I see him) so I'm happy with. I've been going to him on and off for about 6 years. I feel like we know so much about each other b/c we tend to gab a lot. That being said, I like the variety of classes too. Also, I like that classes are MUCH cheaper.

I prefer group classes too. I took a Zumba class once that ended up being just me and instructor and it was pretty awkward (mostly since I'm a horrible dancer with no rhythm-- no reflection on the instructor who was actually very good and motivating). I also like the group peer pressure factor, which makes me keep going the whole hour.

I definitely see @JoJoGirl:'s point though, about a yearly tune up-- that's a good way to look at it. I do like to get new exercises, etc, to do on my own.

I much prefer group settings over 1 and 1. Too much pressure if its just me and the instructor/trainer!

I like both, but probably prefer personal training since i get more one-on-one attention. However, group training is great for beginners or when I first started working out because I can slack off a lil and not be noticed as much or singled out!

@Modern Daisy: OOh she sounds annoying! I've been getting really into the idea of group classes recently because I'm a social person too and that makes it go faster. Plus it turns out I'm kind of competitive, so if I see someone pushing harder than I am, I think "wait, I should be able to do that too..." and end up getting more out of it. But PT has it's place in my heart too ;)

@JoJoGirl: I totally agree with you that it's probably a good idea as a 'tune up' twice a year. And you're right about it being a reflection on the instructor, especially the one I had last night. Her personality was very high strung and she clearly wanted to teach at a more advanced level than I was ready for. But I still think given the choice of a group class or a personal session I would always pick the group class! It's more social too and motivating to see others who are more advanced. Meanwhile there isn't as much 'pressure' on any one person since the instructor is forced to divide attention.

I like both. PT was great for me cause it showed me more and different things to do in the gym. But I love classes too cause they keep you going for the whole hour. Can't slack off when ou are in a room full of people.

Oh my gosh, personal training changed my life! Not sure about for yoga, but for general fitness/strength training, I have a hard time going without it (although I'm taking group classes exclusively now for the first time). I always likened it to seeing the dentist twice a year - just to get a good cleaning and checkup from a professional even though you pretty much know how to do it yourself. :) The PT will make sure your form is right so you don't injure yourself, your weights/resistance is high enough so you're pushing yourself as hard as you should, and design a program to make sure your workouts are as efficient as possible. I'd be wasting a LOT of time at the gym without seeing one every now and then just for a tune-up.

Also if the instructor is making you anxious and stressed, that's likely a reflection on the instructor, not on personal training in general. They should be supportive and motivating!

The last three classes I've attended at my yoga studio no one else showed up so I've had three personal yoga sessions. I know this might sound odd to some, but I actually prefer working out in a group. I do yoga (or run) to destress and unwind and I find the constant attention from a personal session makes me anxious and stressed. Last night was extra bad because the instructor was very high strung and was constantly hovering over me and had me holding poses way longer than any other class I've been to which was extremely difficult.

Of course I spoke up and told her I wasn't at that level yet and I rested when I needed to, but if I had been in a group setting that never would have happened. Same thing when I've belonged to a gym though, I prefer working out in a group and have never felt the urge to hire a personal trainer.

Does anyone enjoy personal training sessions? Anyone feel the same as I do about them?
