I kind of couldn't care less whether people came over to see the baby or not. DH likes to show him off, though, so we've had lots of people over. It's usually okay but we have a couple friends who drive me batty giving all their opinions when they hold him, "I think someone's hungry/gassy/pooping/etc!" Makes me want to whack them. I know when my kid is hungry/gassy/pooping. Please shut up and just enjoy the privilege of holding him in silence, thanks.

Well I guess the verdict is split on this, but at least I feel better that I'm not the only person in the world who doesn't love showing my kid off in person. Not that it matters really... the party will go on regardless :)

I am the same way! I actually need to pare back my facebook friend list but have no time, so I hope that my constant baby picture posts (intended for my family and close friends) causes them to unfriend me!

But, in person, I'm meh about it. I don't particularly like passing my baby around since my family loves touching/kissing her hands/face and it grosses me out (and I am totally not a germaphobe mom.) Maybe you could just let your mom do the showing off? We went to a big family gathering last month and lots of people hadn't met A yet. My mom scooped her up and took her all around all day long. It was actually pretty nice to have my hands free for double fisting mimosas! ;)

it's also more stressful now since she's getting stranger danger! I am bringing her to a client meeting and lunch next week (they insisted are so excited about it). If it was a month ago I would have been all about it, but now that she's not a fan of strangers too much I'm dreading it. I have to do some work while I am on site and they're like we can't wait to play with her while you work. I'm like yeahhhhh you have no idea what you're in for.

Nope, but DH does! He's always bragging and showing DS off to friends. I don't want to come off to my friends like my son is so special or a total rockstar when he's "normal". lol If he's walking and friends ask, I'll respond and say he's taking a few steps here and there. While DH will be like dude! He's such a faster learner!! (insert more proud papa comments). lol,. I'm glad he's excited and proud, but iono... maybe I'm just weird!! Like I thought I'd be all excited to share my pregnancy when I got pregnant, but when I did become pregnant, I became all hush hush about it and didn't even really formally announce to everyone till I was 16-18 weeks along, and didn't "tell" work till I was 20 something weeks along!!

@rahlyrah: exactly this! I didn't even want anyone to hold him when he was a newborn/very young baby. But he has a really outgoing personality now and loves to chat with adults.

For my DD, I don't feel quite as protective (probably a result of being a second time mom) but I don't think I would have enjoyed a meet the baby party when she was vey young.

@Madison43: this made me LOL. An adorable trick no doubt, but certainly not a trained seal :) My LO is too young to do tricks, but that is totally how I feel. I spend my day trying to make HER happy. And I feel like other people a lot of times just want to do what THEY want to do with her-- which is cuddle up on her. Which she (usually) hates. People don't understand babies who need space.

For me, it totally depends on how the other person/people is acting. I really don't like it when people crowd around LO or insist on holding her (she's at an age where she really wants to crawl and explore). DH and I both have family members that are just totally overwhelming with her. I definitely enjoy hanging out with friends/family when they respect boundaries.

I loved having my friends and family see LO in person! I never felt obligated to pass him over, especially if he was acting fussy. I adore my friends and I'm close with my family, so I wanted them to be a part of baby's life.

However, it would drive me nuts if someone else insisted on holding a crying newborn. I'd shove and claw to get that baby back in my arms!!

"SHE'S NOT A SHOW PONY SHE'S A PERSON." --- this is exactly how I feel, particularly now that LO does things that people find entertaining, like clapping and doing her little dance. She's very cute, but she's not a trained seal, so please stop asking her to clap a thousand times.

When se was a newborn, no not really. In small doses it was fine but a lot of people was overwhelming.

Now, at one year? Um, yeah. She loves the attention and smiles an flirts with strangers all the time- like no toys needed on the train, she just smiles at other riders. And I think she is the cutest thing in the world, so I don't mind hearing other people tell me so. It's funny because I personally dislike being the center of attention, but I'm a total attention whore for my baby.

i love showing her off in pictures when people ask. MIL loves showing DD to everyone who is around. She thinks she is the bees knees. I only invite my close friends who have not met her yet to see her. She is unpredictable with strangers. She likes women and some men and may be clingy so if we invited random people over she might "reject" them and that would be the end of the visit LOL

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: I'm hoping, but not expecting, most ppl will be ok to look but not touch. Lo's awake times are only 1.5 hrs now, by the time she is changed and fed that leaves about an hour, and mostly she just wants to sit in her bumbo or hang on her playmat. Both of which I'm taking with us.

I hated it. Some friends tried to throw us a Sip n See, and I declined, as passing my newborn around was my worst nightmare.

My delightful MIL invited everyone who was driving through our city to their family reunion (fifteen-ish people!!!) to stop by our house when I was 6 days postpartum. I remember just breaking down in tears because he started crying and they wouldn't hand him back to me. DH told them "Ok! Visit's done! Let's get on the road! Bye!"

This reminds me of the Cosby show episode when Denise and Elvis were sick and their moms agreed to babysit the twins Winnie and Nelson. Claire and Elvin's mom took the babies all around town showing them off. The grandmas loved the attention.

I am always excited to meet babies and chat with new parents. I don't actually like or want to hold other people's babies. When a mom offers to let me hold her baby I think it'it's rude to refuse though.

... in person?

I love showing her off in photos. She's so adorable and I know my family likes when I post a ton of pics on fb/instagram, plus I feel like I take SO many photos of her every day, by posting 1-2/day on social media it sort of culls my collection for me without trying and I love scrolling back through my feed.

But in person? No. I do not. I don't get the whole "you've got to meet the baby!" thing. I've never said that and never actually invited someone over to meet her. It sort of stresses me out when she's the center of attention in a room, especially if there is more than 1 person there to meet her. She doesn't love being held and trying to get people to hold her the right way so she doesn't freak and also rescue her when she's over it without being rude and manage inevitable melt downs in front of other people? Don't love it.

My mom is throwing a "meet the baby" party for my entire family and some family friends this weekend and we're going because I know it is required and it is important to my mom. But on the phone today she was saying how she just can't wait to show Fia off and how she thinks (even though I don't think I will) I'll have fun showing her off to all the family/friends. I made the appropriate ummhumm'ing noises while silently thinking "SHE'S NOT A SHOW PONY SHE'S A PERSON." :)

But maybe I'm weird!

Are/were you excited for everyone in your life to "meet the baby!" (<--- 10 points if you get the reference ;) )
