When I first met his mom, I thought she was stand-offish and not very interested in getting to know me, but I learned that she is just really shy. We don't have a ton in common but she has been really kind to me and enthusiastic about our wedding and when we were pregnant. I just don't respect them - they're pretty selfish and childish. I have nothing in common with MIL and she's really selfish - she's gone 6 months or more without seeing LO, she expects the everything to revolve around her and I think she resents that I'm DH's top priority now. She's always had a oddly competitive relationship with her own daughter and it's carried over to me. FIL tries much harder and comes to visit more often (to help DH with projects around the house) so I appreciate him a lot but he totally enables my MILs behavior. They don't have a typical parent-child relationship with DH...it's more like friends...which is weird to me. I just feel like it's so complicated. I like them enough to respect them but we don't have the most amazing relationship which will be interesting when LO gets here.</p> <p>MIL &amp; SIL live with each other. SIL is 16 years older than DH and they are our closest relatives. We get along pretty well (now) but they are very conservative religiously in a way that makes them intolerant. </p> <p>FIL &amp; SMIL live in West Palm Beach. FIL is ex-military and very judgmental while SMIL is a complete nut who is OBSESSED with my MIL. She talks about them every single time I see her and she was terrible with DH when he was growing up. They also both adopted children and gave up rights to the older daughter when parenting became "hard." Safe to say, I'm not ever leaving my kid in their care. </p> <p>I love DH's cousins and aunts on his father's side though. They are a blast and generally avoid the FIL/MIL conflict. It's messy!
