I only wake him up if we have to be somewhere or if it will interfere with bedtime. He very rarely hits 2 hours, though, and (almost never goes over that, unless we're on a road trip, and then his schedule is wonked anyway, so I don't worry about it).

I never wake her up. She can nap between 2-5 hours and still go to bed around the same time.

I only wake her if it's after 5:30pm since if she sleeps past then it messes with her bedtime. Other than that I let her sleep when she needs to sleep.

I never wake C unless she is sleeping past 4:30, because that messes up her bedtime. She is always super cranky if I wake her up.

Some babies need more sleep than others, thats why I say ignore the charts and how much he's "supposed" to sleep. The only thing I found useful from those was getting a guideline on how much awake time she needed between naps. She's 14 months old and I would say still sleeps 15-16 hours a day. She's a beast if she doesn't. She regularly took 2 2hr naps a day when she was an infant.

i let LO sleep for as long as she wants for her morning nap, usually it doesn't exceed 2.5 hours though. the only time i wake her from naps is when her last nap is going on 6pm so she is tired enough for bedtime.

My daughter has always been a crappy napper. When she started occasionally taking longer naps I was thrilled... so no, I wouldn't wake her. The only times that I did wake her was if she went past 5 or 5:30 with her afternoon nap. Then I would get her up so that it didn't mess too much with bedtime.

@Adira: ya and for all i know this a phase and he will go back to crappy naps which i dealt with for a while, so i should enjoy this while it lasts!

@hilsy85: good points. he does seem crankier after the crappy afternoon naps. he had one day last week where he napped 1 hour and 50 mins in the morning AND afternoon. he was happy and went to bed nicely. and i think he even did a 7 hour stretch that night - which is now RARE! but i've only had one perfect day like that, so not sure how much it was a ll a fluke. the past couple of months his night time sleep has gotten bad - waking an average of 2 times per night. he used to STTN.

@looch: @katsupgirl: so the consensus seems to be NOT to wake him for good reason! i guess i will think about it. i certainly don't want to wake him and he is definitely in a good mood after a good long nap.

The only time I wake her is if she is napping until close to dinner/bedtime. I won't wake her as much as I will open her door and turn off her white noise. This allows her to wake up on her own and it's not as disturbing as coming in and rousing her any other way.

I never wake her on purpose. I figure if she needs to sleep longer it must be for a good reason. She grows when she sleeps.

I do not wake up my son, ever. I have found that when he wakes up on his own, his temperament is much better than when I wake him up. He's 2.5 years old, but it's been this way pretty much since birth.

How is night time sleep? Does your LO seem tired after that short afternoon nap? Those factors would count in my decision to wake or not from a long morning nap. For my LO, having a long (2.5 hour) morning nap would still allow him to have a 1 hour -1 hour 15 min afternoon nap, and I don't think it would negatively affect his night sleep (but he's not great at night so who knows!). I would probably wake after 2.5 hours, but more so we can stay somewhat on schedule, and less because I worry he's sleeping too much. Unless he's sick, teething, or otherwise seemed like he just really needed to sleep--then I wouldn't wake.

Well, you know me! I wake Xander if he sleeps for 2 hours, but I have no idea if it's actually necessary or not. I started doing it when around 4 weeks (I think) when I was trying to see if I could get some longer stretches out of him at night and I wanted him to distinguish between day and night. Though now he's a big cat-napper and only does 30 minutes to 1 hour naps, so I never have to wake him from a nap anymore. But on the off-chance he does sleep longer than usual, I wake him at the 2 hour mark.

I've been of the mindset "never wake a sleeping baby". And lately i have been thrilled that L has seemed to have gotten back into groove with his super morning naps. They have been more super than ever before actually, with the average being 2 hours, sometimes longer! But his afternoon naps are still crap - often 30 minute cat naps. I am not sure if it is because we are often out in the afternoon so it ends up being a stroller or carrier nap. Or if I should not be letting him sleep so long in the morning. Or a combo of both?

Also, a post the other day got me thinking as a few bees said that they wake their babies if they have been sleeping for 2 hours for a nap. Then i saw this sleep chart that said at this age (7 months), babies should not nap for longer than 2 hours.

I want to get more input....should I be waking L once he hits the 2 hour mark for a nap?

As a side note, I not "complaining" - I much prefer him to sleep too long than not enough! I just want to do what is best for him, so if limiting his morning nap can improve his afternoon nap, then maybe it's worth a shot?
