@winniebee: Yup, I went to bed at 9 during that phase too. Now I have the opposite problem. I have to wake him up to go to daycare! Otherwise he'd probaby sleep until 9am!

@winniebee: I'm SOOO not a morning person. My son went through a period of time when he would get up at 6am (for about 2 months) and I was dying.

@bree72: There was one day where LO napped 1.5 hours, and 2 hours during the day...and she woke up at 5:50am, and refused to go back to sleep. I nursed her and put her back in bed even though she cried and didn't want to sleep. But there was no way i was starting the day at 5:50!

@winniebee: @Sammyfab: Mine never slept 18 hours either, and i was always stressed because i felt that it would hinder her development. Hahaha.

@mrsjyw: I am soo jealous that you have such a good sleeper so early on!

@Sammyfab: SAME! I think he's always hovered around 14 or so but now that he's older it's even less. 10-10.5 overnight and 3 hrs during the day (on a good day).

@winniebee: oh, neither did my LO!!! I swear at 2 weeks old he maybe slept 12-13 hours a day. He grew out of the sleepy newborn phase quickly! I just picked a somewhat arbitrary number though. My main point is that after 6+ months babies just don't need as much sleep so we can't expect them to sleep 12 hours at night and take several 2 hour naps in the day. :)

Yeah, I usually limit naps so we can stay on schedule. It also makes going out for meals easier for us as well. My oldest used to take 2-3 hour naps twice a day! If we didn't wake him most time he would keep sleeping. He sometimes napped for 4 hours. I would get so bored of waiting believe it or not! Now with my second, he's a different story. Mornings hell nap about 1 hour and afternoons he won't give me any more than 2; and most days it's more like 1.5 hours. It's okay b/c he's a happy baby (always smiling) so I like to see him awake. Haha!

@Sammyfab: I don't think my child has ever slept 18 hours in a day his whole life. Even as a newborn, it was mayyyybe 15.

Yes, definitely!! I limit his first nap to 1.5 hours and total day sleep to 2.75-3 hours. I also don't let him nap past 4:30-ish. He has never preferred his nap sleep to his night sleep so I don't have to limit him too often...he limits himself :).

Also, the sleep begets sleep thing doesn't apply the same after a certain point (not totally sure when) where most babies just can't be expected to sleep 18 hours a day like they did as newborns. Eventually you do have to manage their sleep so they are getting enough during the day to tide them over until night...where sleep is the most restorative.

Nope, don't really have this problem, LO is a crap napper. The only thing I do is wake her up by 6:30ish so she will go to bed at 8. This sucks though, because she often falls asleep on the way home from daycare so I know she's exhausted and I have to choose between a cranky overtired baby until bedtime or one that won't go to bed easily.

I just don't let him sleep later than 4pm. But it does seem like if he sleep better at night if he only naps an hour both times. He'll usually sleep 1.5-2 hrs each, but I swear it makes his nighttime sleep worse. Total opposite of what the books say.

As much as i LOVE it when LO naps for a long time, i need be cognizant of the fact that long morning naps will screw up her schedule, and long naps overall will have her wake up WAY too early for my liking.
