Lots of people in my neighbourhood wear comfy clothes (but usually nice yoga pants). Most people have brand new cars, and everyone has a brand new house since we live in a new subdivision, BUT it's really low key. I wouldn't be judged if we didn't have a new car, or if I went out in my wal-mart pajama pants. It's a good mix for sure!
If I dressed flashy I think it would be weird and I'd get odd looks! Small town Ontario for ya!

@meredithNYC: yeah, I think Lululemon is the "I spent a ton of money to look casual" type of thing but it is THE uniform of women in the NY suburbs, too. I know I can't live without my Lululemon now. :-)

No, you actually get eye rolls if you go to the grocery store all dressed up or in heels. We're a sweatpants and slippers at the store kind of town. Me, not so much. Don't get me wrong I go out in sweats or yoga pants all the time but I at least have the decency to brush my hair and put real shoes on!

@Andrea: I agree! I don't think of the Manhattan aesthetic as "flashy". It's more of an understated thing where people look very polished/put together for the most part. That said, I do think there are pockets where flashiness is a thing - like the meatpacking district. I also think those areas tend to attract a lot of visitors/tourists, so are not really representative of the city.

I'm in Brooklyn now and it's noticeably more casual than Manhattan. But, even the "casual" look is likely expensive - think Lululemon.

LOL our house is across the street from a church that doubles as a homeless shelter, so no. But we are 5 minutes away from one of the flashiest towns in the state, so it depends on where you go. My old gym could have hosted its own "Real Housewives" series in the lobby.

Tennessee in general isn't flashy, but we live in one of the wealthier areas (in one of the very few affordable neighborhoods of that area!!! We always have to explain that to people lol) and i definitely notice a lot of older housewife types that are more showy, which always gives me the impression that they have too much time on their hands.

Not at all! Our city is kinda trashy, haha. I'm ok with it, but sometimes I do notice how nicely ppl dress when I visit other cities. There are nicer & trashier areas though, and if I have to do something & look like total crap, I go to the trashier areas so I don't have to feel bad about myself :D

I feel like most people dress up where I live. I wear dress pants/skirt with heels and a buttoned/collared shirt on a daily basis to work. I love jeans and wear them a lot but rarely with sneakers unless I'm going to a kids birthday party or grocery shopping.
With all the colleges here the only folks who wear sweats or yoga pants in public are the college kids.

Nope. We were driving around different neighborhoods in our town because eventually I want to move to a bigger house so we can have a bigger family, and one neighborhood looked like you had to put on makeup and heels to leave your house. I told dh I liked the schlumpy neighborhood where we live where I can go out in my sweats and not feel judged.

Not at all. There are neighborhoods where the houses are fancy and the soccer moms wear their lululemon yoga pants out grocery shopping but that's about as flashy as it gets. Even downtown it's more low key. It's more of a young, artsy community.

It's not at all flashy. It's super low key except for the occasional senior citizen in a convertible. It's so low key that "flashy" cars are stereotypically driven by senior citizens because everyone else drives a station wagon!

I'd for sure feel the pressure to actually spiffy up if we lived somewhere else (for instance, my hometown).

Not really. I wouldn't say Manhattan is very flashy either. I stayed in Beverly Hills a few months ago and the people there were super flashy. People were dressed up at 8 am and driving Lambos.

I wouldn't say Seattle is flashy. Some people are still into grunge which I don't get. I grew up in flashville, though. It was all about keeping up with the Joneses. It's a safe Suburb, so there's that, but it's just so insane that the average house is $500,000 in a recession and every car passing by is a new Mercedes, Porsche, or Lexus. I wouldn't think about leaving the house without getting ready there because I for sure would get looks like, "are you into drugs? What possessed you to walk out of the house without make-up?"

We were shopping today in the states and we went to the swanky mall to hit up PBK, DH actually said "Aren't we dressed a little bummy to go to Somerset?" And of course as we pull in there is a Maserati checking into the valet!

We live right in the city, so its more dressy than most suburbs, but nothing compared to when I lived in Manhattan (which wasn't so much flashy as everyone looked pulled together-- even if they pulled together some crazy hipster bedhead look, if that makes sense). If we are going out to eat or something, yeah, we dress up a little, but I also walk my dog in my pajama pants (doesn't putting a coat and snow boots on count as getting dressed?)

We live in a burb of Fort Lauderdale, and it's low key for sure- which I love! But same as you, when we go downtown, it is major Flashballs! Same thing with the cities we're sandwiched between- Boca Raton and Miami. Super flashy. I'm glad we don't live in the middle of that- I'd be so exhausted trying to keep up!

The suburb DH and I live in is very, very low key and not flashy at all. We went downtown (Dallas) last night and I'm always so impressed at how nice everyone looks! Most people seem to take really good care of themselves, dress nicely, wear nice clothes, and drive nicer cars. I'm glad to live somewhere where I don't feel like I really need to worry about how I look when I go out or spend a bunch to keep up with the Joneses (the suburb next to us is WAY different in that regard), but that means I sometimes leave the house looking really shabby. I wonder if I lived somewhere a little more showy if I'd put a little more effort into my appearance? What about you? What type of area do you live in?
