No way. You drive everywhere in my city. The only people I see walking places are bums & people walking to a bus stop. DH and I do take walks around the neighborhood and to a local park. I went to college in a walking city and I miss it so much.

No, not at all. Like Mrs. YoYo, people are not used to pedestrians and the sidewalk access is limited. Also, the city is VERY sprawled, so you definitely would not just walk to the store (it'd take you 4 hours!

OH, and the little minor fact that it's deathly cold outside a lot. (Our weather advisory today is for "Extreme Cold," and says something like "if you expose your skin, you will get frostbite and be at risk for hypothermia" -- it's -24F.) So the weather does not play nice for walking, either.

In the summer, we do have some walking paths (the city has made great improvements in that area). We just have to wait for the river level to drop after the melt, because much of the paths are behind the dikes (and thus, under water until June or so).

I live in quite possibly the least walking friendly place known to man. I literally have to drive two minutes to work because it's too dangerous to walk. There are hardly any sidewalks and people are not used to seeing pedestrians. I have to drive Baby Y somewhere to take a walk, which really blows. I dream of. The day when I can go for a walk out my door again.

I live in a walking city, but I find NYC to be way too crowded to really enjoy the walk. Often, time I feel like I'm crowd surfing than walking.

The small city we live in is pretty walking or public transit unfriendly. There are pretty much no residential buildings downtown, so unless you live in one of the dodgy downtown adjacent buildings/streets you would end up driving pretty much everywhere.

I live in a walking city. I hate driving so it works out great. Plus the train system here is amazing, so places you can't walk to, is easily accessible by train or subway. Even when we lived in the states, we lived in a walking city.

I grew up in a walking city and loved it. I walked to work when I was in high school and could walk to the grocery store or convenience store easily, or even walk to the historic downtown from my parent's house. It was wonderful. I rode the local trolley to school in middle school instead of a school bus.

I live in a different state now, and am biking distance from the grocery store and some other places, but when we buy a house (hopefully in the next several months) it will be further away and probably not walking/biking distance from anything. :(

I live in the burbs but there are still lots of things within walking distance. You can do all the basic things like grocery store, drugstore, dry cleaner, gym, library, etc. We can walk to our main street in 10 minutes. Granted, I used to live in NYC so there were millions of things to walk to and this isn't the case anymore but I think it's nice that we can still walk to everything that is around.

I love the fact that Manchester is both a walking and driving city. We can walk to our local grocery store and to a metro stop, which can take us lots of places. If you drive into the city centre, you can park and walk all around really easily too.
It was an adjustment coming from Dallas where no one would consider walking- even if it was a short distance!

I grew up in the burbs but have lived in walking cities every since and I wouldn't move back. I can walk everywhere I need to go. In fact I sold my car after realizing I hadn't purchased a tank of gas in eight months! We still have DH's car, but probably only use it once a month to visit his mom out of town.

Currently, we live in a VERY rural area (our house is in the middle of 3 fields!). But before we moved here, our last city was very spread out and even it was fairly small to be considered a "city." Its hard for me to imagine not needing a car for everyday things.

I live in a very un-pedestrian friendly suburb like @highwire. Everything is so spread out, it's impossible to walk to somewhere to even get a cup of coffee or a bag of groceries. I miss cities, but I love my suburb and backyard. It's give and take, I guess.

No. I live in a very un-pedestrian friendly city/suburb. No one really walks in Dallas (unless you live in Addison/Uptown, which we do not). It isn't really that safe to do so.

Nope. We live about 30 minutes outside our large 'feeder' city, and it's driving everywhere. We go for walks for fun, but we certainly never just walk to get groceries or anything like that. Even in our small town, it would take me over 30 minutes to walk to the nearest grocery store. We live in a very car central area, and there is little to no public transit.

I grew up in Los Angeles which is pretty much a big suburb. You have to drive everywhere. Even though we lived 2 blocks from the market, we almost always drove (walking doesn't even occur to you).

Now that I live in New York and am carless, I walk everywhere. I love that I know so many local shop owners and neighbors. I think that a walking city is great for small children because everything -- playgrounds, classes, parks museums, playspaces, playdates... are all just a short walk away. But I would love to have more space when our kids are older (and a car.. I love driving!).

Do you live in a walking city? Do you prefer walking cities or driving cities?
