park slope is where all the manhattanites move once they have kids because the public schools are good. our neighborhood is extremely young family friendly, so yes it is a good place to raise kids even if most people don't have a yard!

Yup, Knoxville is very family-friendly. Big enough without being too big, lots of family events, good schools, close to the Smokies and all of the nature/family attractions there, decent cost of living, etc!

I'm in a small town in the Tampa bay area. We love it. The neighborhood is full of kids and dogs, and there are great schools around. We're close to downtown where there's always something going on, like live music or arts and crafts.

I'm vacationing in Brooklyn now and there are babies everywhere. So obviously it's family friendly, but still not for me. I don't know how mommies walk up the stairs to their house, subway, etc with the baby and all of their crap. And even though there are a million babies, there are no changing tables or high chairs which I find weird. But people have different priorities for where they live.

Oh I forgot to mention all the kid friendly places here. We have the natural history museum, aquarium, discovery gateway, all kinds of splash parks, farmer's markets, skiing, hiking, biking, snowshoeing and all manner of outdoor activities. It may sound like I'm trying to recruit you, and that's because I am! Oh and unlike some other beautiful, but rather remote places you may be considering, we also have lots of music, a basketball team and lots of other cultural events. There's nothing more fun than free summer music in the park!

We are just about to move (yay!) to an Ivy League college town and we're really looking forward to it. Since moving back to the East Coast from San Francisco, we have not loved anywhere we've lived (suburbia without much "character") and are hoping that this change will not only be family friendly, but also culturally stimulating.

We live in a great family area. There is no crime, the schools are high rated, the community has a small town feel even though we're a part of Harris County (Houston, TX). Downtown is a few minutes away and that's where the zoo, museums, great restaurants are.

@Mrs. Jacks: There's something to be said about the family values of the LDS church; I've always admired how close and child-focused Mormon families are!

We live in THE family friendly place. It's like moving not only in space but also time... Like 30 years back in time. Kids play outside by themselves, there are block parties, stores are closed on Sunday. It's pretty idyllic!

Absolutely, great school districts, safe neighborhoods, affordable homes. Tons of four season activities. It's the primary reason we chose to stay here vs moving back to NYC. This lifestyle reflects more closely to how we want to raise our family versus the NYC way.

We live in Irvine CA and was named the safest city for the 8th year running by the FBI. It's extremely family friendly with all top ranking schools, it's extremely clean, and have pretty much no crime. The only downside, to buy a decent house here will cost you over 800k.

We live in the second largest city in new England. Forbes magazine ranked the 10 best place to raise a family, which could be true if you didn't live in our neighborhood. We will move once we have LOs in school though, the suburbs around us have better schools.

I think that the area where we’re moving to (in 2 weeks…eeee!) is a very good area to raise a family. It’s a suburb and I grew up about 10 minutes from there and love it. It has a small town feel (even though it’s growing), the school district is great, it’s relatively safe. We also live only about 45 minutes from Yosemite National Park and 2 hours from the beach so lots of potential for family trips :)

ETA: We will be living in Clovis, California. It's in the central valley, a suburb of Fresno (yuck).

@Honeybee: DH used to be in the Coast Guard, and he was stationed for 3 years in Charleston, SC. He told me on one of our first dates that was where he planned to raise his family one day. We've been many, many times together and I love it too, so we've always had it planned that when we leave SoFlo, we're leaving for the dream:) I just took this job because it was too good to pass up, but we had always only planned to be here for a few years. DH has an identical twin that lives here and is stationed here with the CG, he flies helicopters for search and rescue. He gets orders for his next city next spring, and we don't plan to stay here TOO much longer after that. Thank Goodness.

We'd like to go back to our college town, but that's not an option, at the moment. Instead we're looking at some locations in Utah, which seems really desirable and much more realistic.

NO! We live in Fort Lauderdale, 40 minutes north of Miami. SoFlo is the Crazy Asshole Capital of the World! I hope TravelingBrit chimes in here...We plan to move by the time the baby is 2 or so. We moved here for my job, but it just drives me insane how rude and crazy people are here. And the crime! Anytime you see anything crazy and horrific on the news, it's always down here...Like the face-eating-zombie man? Yep, that was about 30 minutes away from our house!

@banana: Same. Not very adult friendly. But it's a short drive to the "adult" areas. It just has a different city name attached to it.

We purposely moved her 2 years ago because it's very family-friendly. The majority of people who live in this city are families and the elderly. I love it! There are tons of fun community events and awesome parks. The downside is that it's a pretty boring city if you want to go out on the town. There's nothing to do here for some adult fun. We don't even have a movie theater!

Sort of. We live in Nashville. There are so many things to do around here with kids. And we always feel super safe. However the metro Nashville schools kind of suck. There are excellent private schools here but they are pricey. We are moving home to Mass before our LO starts Kindergarden.

Yep - in the burbs of Dallas. Crime is low. There are TONS of activities going on all the time that are family friendly and lots of enriching activities to enjoy all over the metroplex. The public schools are highly rated. Traffic isn't too bad where I live (but gets worse the closer you get to the city, obviously)

I don't feel like the area we currently live in is a very good location for raising a family. DH and I were just explaining to my family this weekend that we'd like to relocate to a more family-friendly area. The thing is, where we live seems perfect on the surface. It's a small town but within driving distance of a couplecouple bigger cities. There's a ton of outdoors stuff to do (hiking, biking, boating, skiing, you name it) and it is a really beautiful location. But after a while you start noticing all the issues that are just covered up that make it undesirable for a family, like gangs, homelessness, drugs, etc... Plus, a lot of the activities in the area are adult-focused (gambling, drinking, clubs, etc...) and there's not a lot in terms of family-friendly locations. Needless to say, we're hoping to relocate soon!

Do you live in an area that is good for raising children? Why or why not? And where do you live (if you feel comfortable sharing!)?
