We lived east of Boulder for a couple years, Lafayette and Louisville are nearby and much more affordable that living in Boulder, very family friendly towns. We spent a lot of time in both Boulder and Denver exploring, and I commuted to Fort Collins for school (Go Rams!). The outdoor lifestyle was a big reason for us to move there- hiking, biking, skiing/snowboarding. We both commuted to Denver for work, about a 30 minute commute, not bad at all considering. The weather varies, it can get cold in the winter and hot in the summer, but for the most part it stays very mild compared to other places we have lived. One Christmas we hiked in sweatshirts, the next we were under 4 feet of snow. The good news is that the weather changes often. Unfortunately our job market is saturated in that area, so we ended up moving :( Otherwise, I would still happily live there!

I grew up in Seattle and it has it's highs and lows. Anyone who thinks Seattle has great weather hasn't lived many other places :-) sorry, but no. Its GREY there, A LOT. I live in Maine now, and it might be cold as hell out, but it's almost always blindingly sunny with bright blue skies. There are plenty of days in Seattle (and weeks, on end) you can barely see the tops of the skyskapers downtown due to the grey, foggy gloom. Then there is the "gel rain". The consistency of shower gel - because it's too warm for snow and too cold for rain. Welcome to winter.

On the other side, I grew up blocks from Woodland Park Zoo and still think of it often. I love Greenlake and wish I could buy my old house in Greenwood. No matter what kind of music you like, you're covered. It's certainly more pedestrian friendly (and public-transit friendly) than LA, and also friendlier in general. The summer days are short and beautiful. Buy snow tires, because no one else does and you'll want to get around should it snow.

I've lived in Seattle for the last 10 years. Everything everyone has said is true, with one exception. The Seattle Freeze is a total myth, especially because when you find out who is doing the "freezing", IT'S NOT PEOPLE FROM SEATTLE! Seattle is such a transplant city, that the girl at work who maybe isn't inviting you to the happy hour with her best friend 10 minutes after you met is probably not from Seattle, she's probably from Florida/New York/Idaho. So please ignore anything you hear about Seattle Freeze- people are actually very nice here. :)
That being said, it rains a lot here, winter can be very grey, but summer is gorgeous. There's lots to do and great neighborhoods to explore. Winter snow is only bad once every 4 years or so ;)
I did just vacation in Denver- nice city, great weather. Cute neighborhoods. Definitely worth a look!

@sarah.clarisse: I can't say anything better than @Mrs. Jacks said, so just consider this me ditto-ing her. (side note, Jacks, now I have the Friday Song stuck in my head). If you have any questions about different neighborhoods, let me know! I've lived in many of the neighborhoods around downtown, and grew up in a 'burb of Seattle. Also, nothing is better than a Seattle summer.

Ooo, one more thing- my husband works downtown (he's part of the team that designed the new tunnel going in) and we live in West Seattle. He takes the water taxi to work every day, and there was one day when he rode it back and forth many times because there were orcas leaping out of the bay in front of downtown. Other cities can't compete with that, I'm afraid. :)

I moved to Seattle nearly 10 years ago (from Toronto) and I still love it. We recently considered relocating to the Bay Area but ultimately decided that the lower cost of living and good career prospects here were a better fit for our lifestyle. It's very family friendly here and contrary to what people have said, I don't really think there is much of a Seattle freeze! When I first moved here, I made tons of friends at work and outside of work. After having my LO, I have now made some new friends who are also new Moms. I must admit though, I only know about 2 native Seattle-ites! Most everyone I know is from somewhere else.

I also have a different experience with my neighbors. We live in the burbs (just across the bridge on the Eastside) and we know the neighbors on both sides of our house as well as the people across the street. Everyone is very friendly and we stop and say hello all the time. Our older next door neighbor always keeps an eye out on our house when we go out of town (and has even mowed our lawn!) and they even dropped by with a gift for our LO when she was born.

The biggest downside is the RAIN. Starting in about mid-Sept/Oct it just seems like it is never-ending. By February, I'm SO READY for it to be done. Before I had my LO, I had skiing/snowboarding to look forward to (I could leave my office in Bellevue and be at Snoqualmie for some afterwork boarding in about 45 min!). After I got pregnant, I couldn't snowboard so the rain started getting to me. Feb/March is a great time to take a sunny vacation :-)

The summer here is fabulous as you have recently experienced. Yes, nobody has A/C (well, we do... ) but it really isn't that bad. It's about 80F for a few days, and the rest of the time it is a comfortable 75F-ish.

My biggest tip is when you are house hunting, REALLY pay attention to how much natural light you get in the house because many homes in Seattle won't get very good light because of the cloudy days and the big enormous trees. We were absolute dummies and we saw our home in the evening after the sun went down so we never got a good feel for how much natural light the house got. There are some big trees around so even during the day, some parts of the house are kind of dim... I love our house, but that is the one thing I hate!

@sarah.clarisse: isn't it amazing? When I was a kid in Orange County, my parents used to drive to San Diego County for good Mexican (even if just their favorite taco truck)... So I really do get it!

Just enjoy the other multitude of wonderful foods in Seattle, including Ethiopian, Vietnamese, Thai, puerto rican, middle eastern, Indian... All great!

@Mrs.Someone: tell me where, because we searched everywhere, drove to shoreline, scoured the east side. I've eaten at probably every Mexican place in king county. (desperate Californians!)

Closest we found were homemade tamales from a grandma who sold them at Mr. Jacks work.

We go back often, so I'm ready to take any suggestions. I'm looking for jalisco style. Oaxacan won't do! ;). No place is too dive- y!

@bluestriped bee: I don't think you were too negative and I agree with a lot of what you said. I think about going back to the east coast on somewhat regular basis, but overall we're happy here. My hubby's job is not at all portable and just plain doesn't exist in most places, so the chances of us being able to move again are minimal, though. But I think most of what I really miss being closer to family and old friends.

Regarding the Seattle Freeze, I agree it exists but I don't think it's limited to Seattle. I had friends in Philly from college and law school, and I made friends with DH's friends, but I can't say I met a single person outside those contexts who became a real friend. My neighbors were not particularly friendly in any of the buildings I lived in, and nobody from the various classes I took or activities I participated in ever showed the slightest interest in getting together outside the structured time. Maybe it was just me, but I don't think so... Honestly, I haven't found interacting with other people to be different in any meaningful way here than it was there. If anything, it's better here because we have nice neighbors that always say hi and have gotten together with some of them for wine, New Years, and walks to the farmers market on occasion! I wouldn't say we're very close to them, but we're definitely on good terms.

@sarah.clarisse: I didn't realize you were already pretty familiar with Seattle -- I moved here without ever having seen the city! It's great that you already have a sense of what it's like, I think that would help a lot in making the adjustment.

300 days of sunshine a year here in Colorado

I haven't spent much time in Seattle, but I've always heard great things about the city and area (Pacific Northwest is awesome!)

I live in Denver and have spent a lot of time in Boulder. Boulder is beautiful and it is a great place for people who like the outdoors (and it is the crunchy mom capital of the USA if that appeals to you). My only real complaint about Boulder is the congestion and traffic. The cost of living is high as well. But overall, a great place to live. Denver is a small city with great people and neighborhoods. It's not as close to the mountains as people think, so if you want to take advantage of the outdoors on a daily basis, Boulder is better.

Good luck with your relocation! It seems like both choices have a lot of advantages!

Mrs. Jacks' mention of friendliness reminded me I didn't cover that. I've found in Denver that people are very friendly, but less so than in the South. BUT they're sooooo much less judgmental. People here are definitely unique a lot of times, but everyone just goes with it. Especially as an atheist, I've found that it just isn't an issue here, whereas back home I'd be ostracized if people found out.

Also, just have to say, if you do move or even visit here, and want a nice dinner without the kids, go to TAG on Larimer Square downtown. It's pretentious as hell (their menu says on the front, "TAG is a celebration of the unexpected, an exploration of the esoteric recesses of our appetites. Our aesthetic transcends both nationality and convention, freeing us to brazenly create and encouraging you to liberally indulge." Seriously, I took a picture so I wouldn't forget the whole thing.), but it's the most amazingly delicious place I've ever eaten. My husband is also quite the foodie, so if you wind up moving there, we can recommend a lot of food places to try!

@Mrs. Jacks: hahahaha. I feel similarly about Seattle. Greenlake is the place to take kids especially to work off the baby weight!

We're near the beach, mountains, yada yada yada but it is super gray here. I have to take so.much.vitamin-D. The summer is glorious though.

@bluestriped bee: Clearly we speak the truth! I'm so sad that you and I only ever hung out once when we were both there. We could have been totally Seattle-grumpy together!

@Mrs. Jacks: Great post. Thanks for writing all of that. I was beginning to think my post was too heavy on the negativity and most of it being because I'm from the east coast. I'm glad it's not just the east coast.

If you are moving from So Cal to Seattle (I've lived in both), the first thing you'll notice is the amazing lush green-ness. That green doesn't happen by accident. It rains from Sept 5th to July 4th every year. It's not a lot of rain at any one time but it is CONSTANT and grey and grating! Having said that, the summers there are the absolute most beautiful days I have ever seen anywhere in the world... and worth putting up with the rest of things.

The second thing you'll notice coming from So. Cal is that people don't know how to drive in Seattle. Oh sure, they are very polite about it, but it causes constant, perpetual traffic snarls. In bad weather, you'll see befuddled Seattlites abandon their cars in the middle of freeways, bridges and other streets that they get confused on. It's a fascinating anthropological study but if you are impatient it definitely causes road rage. (Even if they really are polite about it). The 520 bridge now has a toll that causes everyone to use the I-90 bridge. The Alaskan Way Viaduct has been demolished and not yet rebuilt. Yes, we know traffic!

The third thing is the "Seattle freeze". http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seattle_Freeze I came to Seattle with a bunch of residents so we had a kind of built in friend group, but as I graduated and moved on, I noticed something. None of my neighbors ever said hi. I had an experiment going with one of my neighbors. I said hello to him every single time I saw him. It took 5 years before he responded with a greeting and even then it was because he had a broken leg and I had a pregnant belly. If you were born in Seattle, you are good-- and have friends for life. If not, I hear people refer to the "new friend" who relocated to Seattle in second grade. Also, prepare to be invited to hang out frequently but to have people never follow up on it. I lived there for 7 years. I have some amazing friends from there... but they were VERY hard-fought! (and very few of them are native Seattlites. They are too busy hanging out with their friends from Kindergarten).

Food in Seattle is delicious, but don't be fooled by the fact that you are on the west coast, there is no Jalisco style Mexican food to be found. Just take Mexican off your radar. Well, there is some pretty good Oaxacan food, but that's as close as you are going to come. Fish is incredible. You better love salmon, because it's the best in the world.

Ok, having said all that slightly snarky stuff, it is a hip city (but less snobby than SF). It is a clean city. It is also family friendly with endless opportunities for kids. Some of the best health care in the country and some of my favorite boutique shopping. You will never love music as much as you do when you live in Seattle. You will see amazing shows in small venues. You will listen to John in the morning on KEXP religiously. You will know what the "Friday song of the day" is. You will donate to KEXP. You will know what a "bumbershoot" is and you will have gone to the show. You will belong to the Woodland Park Zoo. You will visit the People's Republic of Fremont. You will walk around Greenlake with a stroller (a lot). You will belong to a CSA. You will recycle compulsively.

You will think that you will have easy access to the mountains, but it is tougher than you imagine. There will be snowstorms that make it impossible to get to Snoqualmie (slides). You won't feel like going all the way to Crystal or Baker very often because the weather is so grey in Seattle that you'll just feel like curling up with your spouse and making a great dinner with local ingredients from the Ballard Farmer's market and from Central Market.

You will love it and you will hate it. And that's when you really know that you are a Seattle-ite!

I moved from the Philadelphia suburbs area to Seattle suburbs and it's still an adjustment for the DH and I. And we have lived here for almost 5 years. It's definitely different from the east coast. Although, we love visiting CA, Portland and Vancouver BC.

The weather is something I had to get used to. Pretty much all of my summer clothes (shorts, short skirts) have not be used... unless I go back east. I miss it. All I wear now are capris and that's only during the 2 months of hot weather. Oh, A/C is not common around here so when there is a heat wave (+80 degrees), it can be pretty uncomfortable with fans scattered throughout the house. During the rainy and gray months, from late Oct to May, it does suck but I got used to it. Buy yourself some cute rain boots.

I did miss going to the NJ shore but I have now traded going to the community pool at my apartment to get my daily dose of sun on the weekends.

East coast traffic might have been aggressive but Seattle traffic is so passive. I know as a true east coaster that I am always in a hurry (but safely). People out here do.not.understand.that.the.left.lane.is.the.passing.lane! I-5 is upto 4 lanes up here and every lane will have a car going THE speed limit or 5 miles under the speed limit. Speed limit on the interstate is 55 MPH. I actually prefer the right lane because that's usually the lane with less people and faster drivers... Faster as in drive between 60-70. Yeah, there are going to be stupid drivers going faster than that. Also, as an asian driver (who is a good asian driver) I do notice that we have a ton of bad asian drivers. My defensive driving course has really benefited me.

Now, on to snow during the winter. When I interviewed, my coworkers told me that I would get 3/4 of an inch of snow at maximum and that it was a rare occurance. Well, first winter I was there we got 1-2 inches of snow about every other day. It would melt then freeze then more snow. Dangerous combination. Coming from the east coast, I was like, eh, this is nothing. I've dealt with this before. Couple inches of snow is nothing. Boy, was I wrong!! Here in Seattle we have hills and not many salt trucks. No good...at all! My hour commute home turned into 4 hours one time because it started snowing during rush hour. I am now terrified of snow. I would rather take a snow or sick day if it's going to snow.

I do believe in the Seattle Freeze... people are nice to you at first but won't take the extra step to become friends outside of work. I've been to countless coworkers birthday and random parties when I live on the east coast. I have been and invited to 2-3 parties but the person who invited me lived in CA beforehand. It can be hard to make friends out here. I have been to meetup groups, too. It's so hard. Although, I'll admit that I've myself have conformed to the Seattle Freeze ways and won't put myself out there to new friends and coworkers. Yeah, I hate that I'm contributing to the problem. I do love talking to people from the east coast or other cities. If you are interested, google 'Seattle Freeze.'

Sorry, this post sounds like a big whiny post of Seattle.
My husband and I just aren't very outdoorsy type because of his health condition. So no hiking, rock climbing and skiing for us. Maybe that was our weakness.

We do love going on roadtrips so we have been out to eastern WA, OR, CA and BC. The scenery is amazing. When the Mt Rainier is out (no clouds), it's great.

Yeah, I'm sorry about my whiny post. Our time in Seattle is coming to an end and we are headed back east to be closer to family and plus we are still east coasters at heart. In general, it was a good experience for us to move to Seattle and be on our own and I don't regret our time out here. It's just time to go back.

Oh, since my DH and I were both born and raised in the suburbs that why we chose to live in the suburbs of Seattle. Some people think it's crazy that I commute is 45-60 minutes but I like living there. City life was just a tad too loud, busy and expensive for us. We like living in a 1000 sq ft, 2bed/2 bath apartment, with garage, community pool for roughly $1100 a month. Plus, we are a two car family so we like not having to pay for parking. I do take the bus to work 3 times a week to save on gas and prevent myself from having a heart attack during my commute home.

Oh, I've definitely become more greener in the choices I make. I try to compost and mostly try to prevent excess. I do love that I'm fairly earth conscious. Cloth diapers all the way whenever I do get pregnant.

@LizSmith: I live in Colorado Springs and have to agree that I love that there's so much emphasis in this state on natural beauty and parks!

Our good friends live in Boulder and it's definitely a "college town". It's also insanely expensive to buy a home there. When my friend is done with grad school they will likely move, even though her partner has a great job with the county. Some months ago, they told us about how a cop shot an elk in a neighborhood and it was a huge clusterf* of lies about how it was legit, but really they just wanted to bag an elk. Anyway, the town went BANANAS and held a memorial for the elk, completely with a candlelight vigil & elk calls. They raised money to make a statue of the animal! I think people there are a little cuckoo.

I live 45 minutes north of Denver. I absolutely love it here. We moved a couple years ago from WI so we're not native. They say there are 300 days of sunshine a year here and it's totally true. I never knew how dark WI was and how much it impacted my mood until I moved here.
I love to visit Boulder, it's really expensive to live there though. It has the best people watching because there are so many characters walking around!
