I used to manage 1 person under me, right now zero (besides an intern). I had a really good boss and I really loved that he was fair & tough on us when needed, but he was also flexible and not anal about stupid things, understanding that everyone has a life outside of work and he is very open to helping us make things work.

@blackbird: No, I don't think so. I had leadership - and change management - training a few years back but a) it was a long time ago and b) I was a different person then. I do think I'd benefit from that, I might ask.

@MaryM: I will read up on those. Thank you. Yeah, you've got to lead by example, I agree. My new boss asked me what hours I would be working because he is in late and leaves early every day to drop off/pick up his daughter from school. When I said I would be working 9-5 like everyone else because how can I expect them to turn up on time if I don't, he replied "You answer to me, not to your team"..... and I thought..... umm, no. You have to lead from the front.

Are they sending you for any training?....all of our managers are required to take leadership and coaching type classes.

I would also suggest reading up on emotional intelligence and active listening.

I think those are the two most important things that my manager lacks.

I've seen a major change between the staff I work with and our manager, and honestly, it began when she started delegating more and contributing less.

We used to have a really awesome "team" atmosphere, but once she stopped doing the work everyone else does and had us picking up slack for her, we lost all respect.

She also stopped following the policies she expected us to follow (like submitting vacation requests 2 weeks in advance)

Practicing what you preach really goes a long way toward respect within my organization. When we can see that leadership is working just as hard as us, we're a lot more inclined to work harder.

Also, we're a very "mission driven" organization. We don't get paid the best, but we're all here because we believe in the mission. So when we can see how our individual work closely ties in with supporting that mission, that motivates us as well.

I managed a small sales team at my last job. I felt that I was very fair. I was flexible but had high expectations. People get sick, have families, need mental health days, but there was also a job to do. I made sure my staff understood their responsibilities.

@MaryM: That's a great recommendation, thanks for that.

I love the idea that a manager is there to hold up their team and support them.... but it does have to be backed up with robust performance management and holding staff accountable. I only subscribed to one side of it before and my previous team (13 of them) took the piss out of me - they knew that they could come and go as they pleased, leave any work they didn't want to do and I'd run around covering for them! They had no respect for me at all (but they all liked me, of course).

I haven't managed a team yet, but I'm getting a degree in management and hope to advance to that in another year.

I highly suggested this book if you want to read about different styles (I got it MUCH cheaper used) http://www.amazon.com/Leadership-Practice-Peter-G-Northouse/dp/1452203407.

I identify a lot with servant leadership because of where I work. It focuses on supporting your staff with their needs in order to get the most work possible done. I like the focus on not just being productive, but enabling a staff to be productive by supporting them.

I've never managed a team or anyone, though I think I'm going to in the next few months. I'm a little nervous about it b/c I have my own way of keeping myself organized. This person is incredibly smart with her MBA, but is 10 years younger than me and just starting out in the working world. She seems really grateful for me helping her in her current role, but I think they'd like to eventually move her under me. I'd like to think that I'd be fair, but I have no idea!

I have an assitant but I've never managed a team. My old boss told me I would not be a very nice manager because I have extremely high expectations of the people around me. (But I also have extremely high expectations of myself so I don't think that's unfair!)

My new job will see my managing a team of 6 people - which I will be expanding to 8 people in in my first few weeks.

I have managed teams before and back then I was super soft..... Like, I was over flexible about the hours people worked, I didn't challenge poor performance very effectively and I just wanted everyone to like me.

Now though (after 3 years in a strategic role) I'm a lot more focused. I really, really want this department to run efficiently and provide a brilliant service for our customers - so I think I will be a tougher manager. Not mean.... but I will have high expectations.

What kind of manager are you? And why?
