I do after every bath. I usually use lotion because she has dry skin and I sing her a lullaby while we get ready for bedtime. It definitely helps calm her.

We did a little bit of belly massage when LO was newborn to try to help with her gas issues. When she was little, honestly, I was a little afraid I would smoosh her or something, so I didn’t do it that often.

Now LO is 9 months old and I massage her when I put her down at night. She has totally gotten used to it too – I lay her down and give her her paci, then she rolls over onto her side and I massage her back/shoulders until she is asleep or nearly there. If I stop early, she will roll back over and look at me like “and where are *you* going?” haha we’ve created a baby-massage-monster.

We love this! My mom thought I was a bit crazy but as soon as she saw how calm LO got she was amazed. Usually after bath I wrap her up with a towel on her head and lay her on the changing table. I then pull her legs out and massage her legs.

There are lots of great moves you can do to massage their bellies to help get things "moving". The easiest one is putting your fingers just below their chest, and drawing a heart pattern down around the belly button.

@MamaMoose: if L is really hungry, I don't think he would be into it either. sometimes though he is too wired up to eat and i can't get him to nurse so massage actually calms him and then i can feed him before bed after too. guess every baby is different with this like everything else!

@Mummystar: i feel that way too sometimes about rushing, then i just have to remind myself that a few minutes is probably than nothing at all.

@maybebaby: it definitely calms my baby before bedtime, that;s why i started and continued! and true about the physical touch. it's like another way of doing skin to skin which i like since my baby doesn't really sleep on me anymore so it's harder to do skin to skin time

@runsyellowlites: aw that's too bad. have you tried it at different times, like after she nurses?

I plan to, esp after readin this post! Babies are such sensory creatures and after being carried so close to us for ten months it makes sense they'd love such physical touch. I've heard that infant massage can be a really effective way to be worked into post bath pre bedtime routine (once they have more of a routine) and that can help them calm down before bed.

yup its part of her bedtime routine! lo is just about 6 months and baths are starting to become fun so nightly massages help her wind down for the night and tells her its amost time for sleep. i love the bonding time of it and hate having to do it in a rush. lo seems to enjoy it.

Nope. She hates it! I've tried a handful of times but she gets fussy if she isn't dressed for bed in a timely manner, mainly b/c as soon as she's dressed she nurses & well she gets ansy for the boob! lol

We tried to do it after her bath but she's not into it. She's already pissed enough to have to wait to get dried and dressed after her bath. If it were up to her she'd go straight from the bath to the breast. Massage would just be adding one more delay in her mind!

After her bath we put lotion on her and massage it in for a while to help her relax. Sometimes I massage her legs when she is fussy and doesn't need anything else.

@travelgirl1: haha, I can't say i have fancy moves either. Actually, I think that's what scared me off from doing it in the beginning - I had read all these instructions with pictures on how to massage to a baby and it seemed so complicated! When i finally did it, I just massaged him and used my common sense not to massage too hard or soft, no instruction manual needed.

I don't do it 'properly' as in I have no fancy massage moves, but I give her a little massage after her wash every night, using coconut oil. She seems to like it : )

I don't massage my baby right now, but it's great to hear that you started later and your LO likes it! When I was pregnant I always thought I'd do infant massage, but my guy was so fussy for his first few months that I couldn't even imagine trying it. Now he's 7.5 months and I sort of forgot about it, but you're inspiring me to give it a try - thanks!

I read in all my pregnancy books about how babies love massages and it's good for bonding and other health-related reasons. But I admit that while I was pregnant, despite what I read, I thought it would be weird to massage my baby. And then for the first couple of months, I never even bothered to try it. In the early newborn days I also felt he was too delicate and I wouldn't know how to do it.

Finally, I just started massaging him one night when he was being fussy and not getting sleepy for bedtime. I was amazed! I could tell he really liked it, and I loved doing it to him for the bonding/quality time factor which I didn't expect. Now I don't do it every day, but probably a few times a week, especially around bedtime. Sometimes I see his whole body just relax, or he looks up at me and smiles and just looks like he's happy. Other times he coos and giggles. I don't know why, but I am amazed by this and now I only wish I started sooner.

Am i weird for feeling this way about massaging my baby? Do you massage your baby, how often?

Oh and i also started massaging him with just my hands. Then i started using lotion and now even baby oil sometimes. I am becoming a professional baby masseuse!
