@mrbee: I remember you saying this about doing the same thing at the same times... we just moved two days ago but I am hoping to get into a routine so we can get out in the neighborhood and meet other moms/kids on the morning playground beat! :)

I have already met other moms and set up playdates via Facebook groups in my area. Maybe try that? We are going to do classes too but I think sometimes the structure of classes/activities means parents are more likely to focus on their kid and not as much on chatting with other parents. Just a guess.

@mediagirl: I meet people at Gymboree and neighbourhood playgroups at the community centre. No one talks to me at organized sports like gymnastics!

I meet more mom friends at school/camp because there's the possibility of seeing them at drop off and pick up every day. As they get older, you can just drop them off for activities, too, so I might not see anyone since I will go run an errand during that time.

@mediagirl: When we last visited the suburbs of LA (where Bee's parents live), Bee took the kids on a regular walk around the neighborhood... and spotted another mom of kids! They just waved back and forth at first but after seeing her a few times, the mom invited Bee and the kids in for a playdate!!

The city is different, but I had a lot of luck meeting parents when I did the same thing every day at the same time... we'd run into each other over and over, and eventually say hello. (Ok, they'd say hello to me - I am not good at saying the first hello.)

@mediagirl: we just got really lucky at the park. We are city, so we go everyday and just got blessed with hitting it off with some families...

The only time this has happened to be so far is through my DD's girl scout troop. We have mom's night out without the girls every so often. Aside from that and day care/school, I haven't made any close friends through organized activity like ballet, swim, or gymnastics. I think it does get much easier as they get older, though. The extra-curriculars demand more time. I've noticed that parents of kids on swim team are very friendly with each other around here.

@mrbee: I think there's something about the suburbs vs the city there. Here kids play in their backyards (I hope...) and don't hit up the playgrounds a lot. We don't have block parties. :( You would think it would be easy to meet other parents in a neighborhood with a ton of kids in it but I swear no one is ever outside...or at least in front of their homes.

@Truth Bombs: I never see parents at daycare! I must drop off at an "off" time because I never bump into another parent in her classroom. To be honest, there aren't that many kids in her class that she/I like anyways. :(

We did a ballet class, but didn't really get close to other parents.

We also had good luck with daycare and preschool. Also, block parties and playgrounds!

So far not yet. We did a gymnastics class but didn't get to know new parents. But we also signed up with existing friends from day care so I probably wasn't as sociable as I would have been if we went in not knowing anyone. We are doing soccer and ballet this year but again, we signed up with friends. I find day care to be the best place to make mom friends because you have so much exposure to each other and each other's kids. I have made 4 super close mom friends through day care and now we hang out all the time, watch each other's kids, help with pick up/drop off, etc. It's the bomb.

We have a 3 year old and have not done any organized sports or activities yet, just private swim lessons. I'm curious, do you meet other parents and become friendly with them at your kids organized activities?

To be perfectly honest, I'm looking for more mom friends. I have very few. I would be willing to sign my kid up for a fall class (gymnastics or soccer) if it would mean I have a shot at meeting some other moms. :silly:
