I don't think an ob/gyn is a specialist. I have never had to have a referral and have had several different insurance companies

It depends on your insurance. I need one for all specialists besides an OB. I've had several insurance companies in the past few years and they were all different regarding policies.

I've had both HMOs and PPOs. An OB/GYN has been the only "specialist" I've never needed a referral for. Some women only see an OB/GYN so I'd think you wouldn't need a referral.

I've always had HMOs and never needed a referral for an OB/GYN...@marionberry explained it best.

If you have an HMO plan and need referrals for specialists then yes you do. I did too. It's likely that your PCP will do a urine test and then refer you to an obgyn which you may have some say in. We also had only a few hospitals to choose from. But it was 100% covered so it was still good!

The other thing I didn't know was that you can't change PCPs in my plan during pregnancy (don't know about your plan.) and I could only change OBs once if I wanted.

I don't know exactly what kind of plan you have, but I am pretty sure an OBGYN isn't considered a specialist. I have different copays for primary care and specialists, and my copay for my GYN is the same as for my GP because it's not a specialist.

Does the provider have a website you can look at? Or sometimes there's info right on the back of the card...

I don't believe you'll need a referral for an OB. They're not considered a true "specialist" because an OB/GYN is seen as a provider of primary care for women.

I wouldn't think an OBGYN would be considered a specialist.
I've had about five different insurance companies over the last ten years and never needed a referral... I think it's because stuff like your annual exam is typically always covered by your insurance and its not like your GP can do that for you.

I have a PPO insurance plan, and did not need a referral for my in-network OB/Gyn. I started seeing a new one upon finding out I was pregnant, as the one I had been seeing for years unfortunately went on leave for cancer treatment. I had no issues with the switch/new doc.

Hmmm.....I would think an OBGYN would be considered a specialist but I'm not 100% certain.

I know I need referrals for specialist. So, I guess is an OB./GYN a specialist?

It most likely depends on your insurance coverage. Do they have a website? You could check your insurance coverage on there. I have United and I do not need a referral to see any doctor.

My insurance company is closed for the evening, but I'm just wondering if anyone on here knows. Do I need a referral for an OB/GYN? It sounds strange to me, but what do I know! We changed insurance options this year and we haven't had to use them too much yet.
