Chicken Little by Sally Hobson. Chicken Little gets eaten by a fox at the end. I change it to "but Chicken Little went to find the King without the fox, so the fox had a snack and took a nap."

There's a page in Giraffes Don't Dance that doesn't rhyme! One where the cricket is playing the violin and it tries to rhyme violin and thing. Um that doesn't rhyme! DH and I are trying to come up with a new stanza for that page but we are a little low on creativity right now. There's also a page that says Every year in Africa the animals get together for a jungle dance. And we always say that's not really true when we get to that part. I dont know why it bothers me but I just feel it's disingenuous to tell our kids this!

@Smurfette: I hate that book. I change the name too... to just mommy hare. why the "nut brown"? so unnecessary!

Yea, I do that all the time... especially in Dr. Seuss books because they're so long, so I improvise!

@grizz: Yes! What is with the grouchy ladybug? I took that one out of our rotation. Similarly, my husband made a "no Curious George books" rule after we read one where he ran away from home and had all sorts of adventures and didn't get in trouble.

My daughter is pretty small right now so my only reason for skipping words or pages is to speed up long books.

I've tried to avoid books that have subject matter in them I disagree with.

Personally, I don't avoid words like hate, stupid, scary, kill, ect.

@grizz: i hate 'the very busy spider'! she's rude, ignoring all the nice animals trying to do things with her. thank you for hating an eric carle book, i thought i was the only one who didn't adore all of his books. do you have 'The Very Lonely Firefly'? i love that one

in 'Let's Be Kind', i change all the religious parts. 'god hands me chances to simply be kind' is changed to, 'the world hands me chances to simply be kind' etc. and i always change 'hate' & 'stupid' in books until kids are in kindergarten.

lol, yes I do it all the time. I get tired of reading the same books over and over so I'll skip pages or shorten the story. If I'm really lazy, I don't even read aloud and DS just flips through and looks at the pictures.

@autumnlove: @.twist.: lol at "a stoner vibe"!

I skip like half the pages in the Grouchy Ladybug. DS always hands me Eric Carle books, but The Grouchy Ladybug is too freakin long, and every page is the same. The ladybug is in a bad mood and wants to fight everyone. Get over it, ladybug.

I haven't yet had to change/omit anything in a book. However, L is usually too busy to care about what I'm reading.

I do this when books use words like dumb, stupid, hate etc when the child is in a phase where they are likely to latch on to hem and use them all the time. In Alice the Fairy there is a line about how broccoli is often poisoned and should never be eaten, that book was in heavy rotation right when the lo's decided they kind of liked broccoli so I changed that to brussel sprouts.
