I got a load of hand-me-downs from a family member and had no clue what I would use and what wouldn't work for me, so I have a closet full of bins. Every time I go through the bin for the next size up, I get rid of 3/4 of it because it's stuff that's out of season or just won't work for me, but I just had no way to evaluate when I was pregnant.

I've also found with hand me downs that there's always one item that I have none of, like pants, or long sleeve onesies or something. I admit to jumping on those opportunities to buy, like, 8 pairs of cute leggings which may or may not go with anything else I have, because I really try to constrain my clothes shopping otherwise and rely on what I already have.

Yes and no. We are the ones giving away to friends everything he has outgrown, not receiving hand-me-downs! So I dont have anything "ahead" - everything in his closet I have purchased (plus a gift here or there) in his current size, which is 18-24 month. That said, I still have too much. Haha. But it's my own fault. When you're one and done you can justify to yourself a lot of spending, unfortunately!

I'm in the same situation. I'm so thankful that we have a ton of hand me downs from my sister in law, but I often feel sad that I don't buy anything myself for DD. She's in 2T/3T clothes right now, and I think I have spent less than $50 on clothes so far! But the bins are out of control. we have roughly 20 bins going up to size 8 in girls right now.

I really don't, but it helps that we don't get hand me downs from anyone. My mom will occasionally pick up stuff for him (DS 18m) at a consignment store or on sale, but she always checks with me before buying to see if it's something he needs.

We are lucky that we live in a warm year round climate (Florida) where he can almost always wear shorts and t-shirts, so it's easy to buy larger sizes on sale.

I am also crazy about making sure his clothing is super soft and comfy and easy to move in. I don't like seeing kids in stiff or uncomfortable clothes. So I'm kind of picky about what he wears. And it's very hot where we live, so everything has to be lightweight and not tight. I have a hard time finding shorts that meet this criteria and have a loose waistband. Plus he naps in his clothes at daycare so I want them to be comfy for that. AND stuff that I'm okay getting dirty at school.

He has a few "nicer" pieces of clothing in each size like for church and stuff (like polo shirts), but that's about it. He doesn't have stylish/brand name stuff, but I don't care.

If people were giving us boxes of hand me downs, I would for sure get rid of most of it. I don't have space. Lol.

We have WAYYYYY TOO MUCH for DD. My mom over buys for her on a constant basis. I immediately donate or sell the pieces that I don't like or I know won't fit and/or work in her wardrobe. I sell anything that she's outgrown to a resale shop. I don't save anything except REALLY special items that she has worn a lot or that just mean a lot to us (probably one out of 50 pieces). I figure if we ever have another girl, we will just get new things because her stuff will be out of style or worn out anyway! But yeah, we still have WAY too much!

I definitely have this problem with hand me downs- it's getting a little easier now that we've figured out a few things though. I used to save the stuff that was "fine" and basically the only purpose or ever served was clothing my child on the days where I was woefully behind on laundry. I also kept getting like we had plenty so I wouldn't buy much but then I'd realize we had major gaps in her wardrobe- like I know my friend would buy shirts and leggings in sets but the leggings would rarely make it to us because they'd wear out so much faster or he girls would grow out of the shirts first so we'd get the leggings in a different batch of clothes.

Now when we get a load of hand me downs I do an initial sort and ditch everything I don't love. As her girls get bigger the donate pile grows because they do lots of character stuff and we don't. When I am ready to get ready for the next season I pull out everything again plus the stuff I may have purchased in advance and purge again both as I go and after I find matches. Some stuff I make a list of things that need matches. I still end up with an abundance most of the time but it is at least all usable!

Oh for suuuuure. Hard to pass up good deals and also cute clothes! I do try to make sure I only buy what she'll really wear.

Both my DDs already have matching clothes for this fall/winter and Christmas lol! Target winter clearance FTW!

I made a lot of mistakes when I was first setting up my son's wardrobe. I didn't listen to what experienced moms were telling me, which was buy what you need when you need it and keep it simple.

I had tons of jeans, button down shirts, over the head sweaters, shoes, none of it worn and all of it expensive, because hey, little stuff is so cute.

Now, I know what I am buying, I know which pants work, which shirts will be worn. I do buy one or two "special occasion" outfits per year, but more often than not, I have my son in comfort clothes. I also buy multiples of shoes, boots and outerwear since those are often needing to be washed.

@youboots: I sometimes feel the same. Our neighbour dumps hand me downs on us all the time. It's great (and very generous) but we're overflowing with clothes. I'm hoping #2 will be a girl cause i've saved most of it. With the hand me downs I try and go through the boxes and be harsh on what I really like/need, I also sort them by size and type within the box so it's easier to get an idea what we're short on. I also go through the boxes every few months to see what will fit her when. I have kept a variety of items as she's almost 2 and starting to show a preference towards what she wears.

I keep a drawer of just daycare clothes that are crappy hand me downs and we have a million pairs of pants. The nicer hand me downs and stuff I've bought I use for weekends etc.

I way overshopped until T was about 1. I stocked up on sale items and things that did not really go together and I easily had 3x what I really needed.

I made an effort to only buy special or unique items ahead of time after one and figured I could fill out her wardrobe with what she needed. Well I'm organizing her 2T clothes and shoes and there is still so much stuff.

My sister has sent me a bunch of awesome hand me downs, and I have a friend with 2 girls that gives me everything plus gifts from family and friends - I feel like I am drowning in kid clothes. I have only purchased about 20% of what I have- I feel like I should be able to pick out some items for my DD but then I feel guilty for being wasteful. We already have 3T and 4T boxes that are full and lots of shoes up to 12. She's in a 6.

Any tips on organizing? Or do I need to purge with wild abandon? I feel like I should hang on to everything so I have choices when she develops preferences. I have a 4x5' closet full of bins for the future and a bunch she has grown out of in our basement. When she grows out of clothes I do try to get rid of at least 1/2 of it.

Any tips/advice/commiseration?
