We have a two car garage and two cars and they both get parked in the garage. It drives me nutso that our neighbors do not park in their garage (or on their driveway for that matter) and PARK IN FRONT OF OUR HOUSE. Seriously it is a huge point of contention for me. Park in front of your own house! Our garage is attached and we live where it snows a lot. We enter/exit the house through the garage. In our current house, the garage is 1 car plus a workshop and it's detached from our house. The driveway goes past the side of the house into the backyard, where the garage sits. It would be a major PITA to park my car in the driveway, move the gate open, then drive it forward into the garage. Plus, the garage is DH's mancave. He has a TV, pool table and darts board set up in there, plus all of his yard equipment, our DIY equipment, tools, etc. It's pretty much a guarantee that unless we move into a house that has a dedicated mancave, we will never park cars in our garage. I get home before my husband but I leave before him. If I parked in the garage, he would most likely park in the driveway which means we'd be doing the car shuffle everyday. If I park in the driveway, he parks on the street. I only park in the garage when I know it's going to snow. And he parks in the driveway because it helps keep the majority of the snow off the driveway because his car is there! I find it so strange that no one in our neighborhood parks in their garage, to the point that if there are no cars in the driveway they think you're not home. They'll leave expensive cars out to bake in the sun, even with huge basements and sheds. I was just talking with DH about this yesterday as I totally understand why people can't park in their garage.with all of the stuff we have to store. In our neighborhood, there's a good mix of people not being able to park in the garage. But for some, it's b/c they have such a big family that they have 11-15 people passenger vans. Our garage is detached and in the backyard. There is a driveway, but a fence blocks it. If we were to park in the garage, we would have to get out, open the fence, deal with our two dogs, drive in, and close the fence. It just isn't practical. If we ever move, I want an attached garage, just for convenience and to keep our cars cleaner. Other times DH parks his outside if there's something we need to keep in the garage for some reason (for instance when we got a new dishwasher and were waiting for the old to sell). At our last house we had a 1 car garage and had to tandem park with the garage and the driveway. It was in a condo association so we weren't allowed to park anywhere else. Now we have a bigger house with a 3 car garage and it is AWESOME. We can both park, it's not tandem, and we still have the 3rd bay for storage. But even if we didn't have it, I still wouldn't want the garage for storage. Around here our weather hits both ends of the spectrum - hot summers and cold snowy winters. There's no way I'd leave my car out in the snow and have to clean it off if I didn't have to. Otherwise we use it for storage. Most houses in our neighborhood don't have basements and a lot of people use their garage for storage and park in the driveway.
