I don't, really, but out of curiosity I just looked up my favorite girls name and it means "Pity" or "God is my light." We're not religious sooo...maybe if we have a daughter she'll be pitied because she got stuck with us as parents?

No, I don't care about meanings. I honestly have no idea what either of the names we have picked out even means.

@oliviaobliva: Did that name happen to be Cecily? Because I really like that name, but of course I dislike that meaning...it bothers DH more than it bothers me. Who is really going to know or ask about the name meaning anyway?

Not really. Hunter means exactly what the name would suggest. Although his Dad will be teaching him how to hunt when he is old enough so I suppose it's fitting. We chose his 2nd name because it's my father's name and Hunter John sort of just flowed.
It wasn't until after we'd settled on names (both genders) that we bothered to look into meanings.

@MoonMoon: Everything I've read (by which I mean the first page of google results) says Claudius also means lame.
From Wikipedia:
"The nomen Claudius, originally Clausus, according to legend, is usually said to be derived from the Latin adjective claudus, meaning "lame""

I do care a lot, but I don't trust online name sites! Their definitions vary widely and are often inaccurate. For example, I don't think Claudia means lame. It's the feminine derivative of Claudius, a Roman dynastic name. Maybe they say it means lame because the emperor Claudius had a speech impediment?

I care about name meaning. There are sometimes where I just can't handle the meaning. (For example, someone I know used a name that means "misshapen head" for their child who had severe birth defects.) Most of the time though, it's a nice thing if a name has a positive meaning, but personal meaning can trump dictionary meaning.

Not really. The only names I stray from are very biblical names because we are not religious.
My issues with names even having meaning are:
- One name could mean so many different things depending on culture.
- No one has the meaning of all the names memorized - I don't even know what my own name means.
- A child defines their name, not some antiquated idea.

No as much as my husband! He will nix a name if he think the meaning is bad. If a name I like has a great meaning, I see that as icing on the cake.

I thought it would mean something to me... but in the end I chose name over meaning. J's name doesn't have a positive meaning. But he gives it a whole new meaning and that's what's important to me :)

Name meaning mattered a ton to my mother. All six of us kids have special meanings to our name:
-She outshines the starts
-Victorious
-Dearly loved
-Bright/honor
- Praiseworthy

I'd probably check that it didn't mean something really bad, but just "not positive" or not applicable wouldn't bug me. My LO's name means "born on Christmas", and unless Christmas has moved to August, she was not.

Yup it was very important that the name mean something positive. I think this might be cultural. Chinese names always have some sort of meaning. I think that definitely played a part in why I cared about the meaning as well.

I've seen different meanings listed for LO's name but usually it is listed as either strong or joy.
