@Alivoo01: It's not a firm cut off or anything, just in my experience as an instructor, I've only met one 4 year old that had the weight and coordination to be able to make the movements necessary to steer and control a snowboard.

@Honeybee: In Utah, we have a program where you pay $300 and you get skis/snowboard for your child until they are 18. You trade in each year and when they turn 18, you get to keep a pair of skis or snowboard. We figure it's a good investment!

@Mrs. Jacks: Are you going to rent Lala skis this year, or buy? We talked about taking DD out, but with our living plans so up in the air, it probably won't happen. We have some snowboards I want to get rid of, though, so I'd love to swap them for some kids' skis...

Absolutely! I love snowboarding but am a terrible skier. We'll take LO to the slopes when she's older and start her in a ski school and then let her decide whether she wants to stick with skiing or learn to snowboard.

As a snowboard instructor, I can say that it is a rare child that has enough weight to shift for snowboarding before the age of 4-5. It's just the mechanics of the equipment that make it hard. However, we're getting our daughter on skis this year at the age of 2. Skis can be managed much earlier.

Definitely. I grew up in a town with 3 different ski resorts, and was out on the mountains with my dad before I was walking. I have been skiing since age 2. My parents still live there and it is a huge part of what they do, so I am sure that each winter we will enroll future LOs in ski school.

I loved family outings on the slopes! My favorite was when we would pack a picnic and eat at the old mine ruins!

I grew up cross-country skiing - I can't say I loved mandatory family outings as a teenager, but as an adult I love to strap on my skis and go.

I learned how to downhill ski as an adult, and I'm not a huge fan - the speed and lack of control frankly terrifies me. DH learned to snowboard a few years ago, and he's pretty fearless. I want my kids to learn when they're young - so they're confident in their abilities before the fears of adulthood set in (though maybe that's just something their crazy mama will suffer from).

DH is an awesome snowboarder. We will definitely teach LO how to ski or snowboard, but I think we will wait until he is 3-4.

I've seen LO's bombing down the mountain- it's a good age to teach them, because they are totally fearless at that age.

I want them to learn how to do both, preferably skiing first.
My dad taught me how to ski when I was young. It was a special day and my dad would take us out of school for one day (just one kid at a time so we got all of his attention) so I would love for hubs to do this with the kids.
I learned how to snowboard when I got to college and I'm much better at it and I prefer it to skiing, but I have a weird hang-up and I feel like its not cool for a "mom" to be snowboarding. My friends tell me I'm being silly.

YES! And be "we" I am in @Mrs. Blue: 's camp - I will enroll him in ski school / private lessons.
I think 3 or 4 is the perfect age to begin. My cousin is a ski instructor, so hopefully we can him to come to Austria with us for a ski trip.

Speaking of ski instruction, need to get SO lessons too. I really love to ski and it would be nice to share it as a family activity.

We will definitely teach ours to ski, although by "we" I mean "a ski-school teacher." If my kids are anything like me, teaching them something like that myself will not work well. :) I think most ski schools let kids starting at 3 enroll. We will probably get them private lessons each time we go from the time they are tiny so they just grow up knowing what they are doing. Plus, those little tinies are SOOO CUTE on the little T-lifts!
