@nanilani: FWIW, it took us two years to get pregnant. If I held off on everything, "just in case," I would've lost it. You never know how long or not long it'll take!

@nanilani: the one thing that came to my mind with the more exotic locations is whether the necessary medications (especially vaccines and malaria prophylaxis) are pregnancy safe should you be pregnant at that point.

Thanks to everyone for all of the advice! I think @anya has hit the magic question . . . I just wish I knew the answer! In the meantime I'll have to look into refundable airfare, which is surprisingly difficult to find.

If this were our first opportunity to travel then I would definitely wait to TTC, but the reality is if we waited until we visited everywhere we'd like to go, then we would be childless forever. The world is too big and exciting!

The piece I'm struggling with is changing our lifestyle before it is necessary (I'd be quite willing to do so if I knew for sure I'd get pregnant in that time). I recognize that it is quite possible, maybe even likely, that I won't be able to get pregnant right away. If this happens to be the case, I'd think that missing out on life experiences due to an overabundance of caution would only compound the disappointment. I'd hate to feel as though I sat at home for no reason, with neither a pregnancy nor the travel experiences to show for it.

Can you tell I'm a big planner? The unpredictability of it all is killing me! 0:)

If it was a trip I was really excited about, I would wait. DH and I did exactly that, we booked one last amazing trip (2 full weeks in Hawaii) and specifically waited to TTC until after we got back. Then we didn't book anything in the next year, although we did end up traveling quite a bit due to weddings and work conferences. I enjoyed traveling during weeks 16-32 or so, but before and after that wasn't as fun.

On the other hand, if you won't be disappointed if you have to cancel the trip or might feel sick during it, go ahead and book it anyway!

Yeah, I'd just pay a bit extra for refundable tickets. Or maybe book tickets, but then be prepared to change to something a little tamer last minute. Like, book something adventurous in Africa, but have a back up plan to go to a resort in South Africa and lay on a beach. Maybe wait on reserving hotels and excursions, etc.

It's such a personal decision and there's no right or wrong but you have ask yourself whether you would be more disappointed by having to cancel your trip (or not fully enjoy yourself on it), or by going with your second choice trip and when the times comes it turns out there was no reason to.

What time of year are you looking to go? We planned enough in advance that I could still go if pregnant. However, a place like Africa, if you decide to do a safari, would be difficult to do pregnant. Asia would be fine unless you're a big fish eater and have issues eliminating that. We did Tokyo just before TTC, nothing too crazy while TTC (just how scheduling things worked), just did London and Paris early pregnant. I couldn't/didn't drink but other than that was okay.

I went to Egypt when I was in my first trimester, but it was a resort on the beach type of vacation, not an exploring the pyramids and riding a camel type vacation. I can't recall when we had the trip planned, but we had travel insurance where I could either be airlifted out in an emergency or we could rebook the trip for a later date.

My biggest concern, which turned out not to be a problem, was drinking the water and eating the local food.

We just went ahead and planned our trip. I figured it's a consolation prize if I'm not pregnant, and if I had to cancel because I was pregnant and couldn't travel, then it would actually be something I could live with.

Could you pay extra and have a refundable ticket just in case?

Once we started to TTC, we started to plan around TTC. I'd just plan a trip 3-4 months in advance to that if I did get pregnant that cycle, it wouldn't be that far along yet when we went.

@nanilani: depends where in those places. South Africa is pretty westernized and besides the long flight would be similar to travelling in the US. More rustic or adventure trips I'd probably either wait and start TTC on that trip or after. I know if I went to some places there's activities (like diving etc) that I'd want to do while there, but I couldn't do while pregnant. Also think what vaccinations/meds you'd need on the trip (malaria, yellow fever etc).

SE could be good, but depends on how you handle the heat/smells, my sense of smell was like a bloodhound and I would have been sick all the time from combo of heat/smells.

I was pretty sick my 1st tri, and I stuggled even for a long weekend in boston. But some people are fine. You both would have to be ok at modifiying what you do on the trip as needed if you got pregnant. The last thing you'd want is to feel like you wasted the trip because you felt unwell through it.

Do you plan your life around TTC or TTC around your life?

DH and I take one big international trip each year and are in the early planning stages for a trip next spring. We are also planning to TTC #1 in the new year. Because of all the unknowns that comes with that, I'm having trouble signing off on a potential destination. The places we've been talking about (think Africa or SE Asia rather than Europe or lying on a beach somewhere) seem like they could be unenjoyable if I were to be pregnant -- I don't know if I'd be comfortable walking a lot, if I'd get morning sickness, if I'd have to avoid certain foods etc...

I'm torn on whether to stick with our more adventurous ideas and hope for the best (whether that's an easy pregnancy or not being pregnant during our trip) or to play it safe and pick a tamer destination. It seems silly to change our vacation plans when I'm not even pregnant yet, and if this is potentially our last child-free big trip I'd like to enjoy it! DH would appreciate a more exotic trip but is deferring to me on this one.

At the same time, I don't want to postpone TTC just to take a vacation, especially since we've been fortunate enough to travel overseas several times. I'm not expecting immediate success due to PCOS, and insurance requires at least a year of TTC before paying for any infertility treatments.

Would you take the chance on booking the trip? Pick a less exciting but easier destination? Or if you traveled abroad during early pregnancy, how did it go?
