@mrs.shinerbock: Thank you. I hate that people lump Lukas in with "creative spellings" since that is our son's name and we spelled it that way because I am Swedish. That is the traditional spelling. We weren't trying to be unique and I always feel a bit judged on here for that since this discussion comes up regularly. :bummed:

I prefer traditional spellings with a few exceptions. If it's a family name or a cultural spelling, I enjoy those. Maksim is one of my favorite names as it's the Russian variation of Maximilian. Same with Mae being the French variation of May.

@nana87: I agree. I live in Central Europe, so there are a ton of names where C is swapped for a K or there's an F instead of PH (Sofia/Sophia, Josef/Joseph) or Ys and Js are used where they wouldn't be elsewhere (Anja/Anya). But in typical North American culture, I prefer standard spellings.

My problem with unique spellings is pronunciation. I feel like a name should be easily pronounced from its spelling (names from different cultures are exceptions). Also, random "y"s just irk me. Use a real vowel!

Traditional, but I agree that there are some names that have multiple "traditional" spellings in different languages-- so like Lukas from the original list, that'd be similar to Karl/Carl, Jacob/Jakob, etc and I wouldn't consider those unique spellings

Traditional. I don't get the unique spellings, it seems like it would just be harder on the kid. Jackson and Jaxson will be still pronounced the same in a classroom (and I was a Sarah Last Initial in every class in school...)

Definitely traditional. I prefer uncommon names to non-traditional spellings as the way to give a child a unique name. If you are going to have to spell it anyway, why not?

@catlady: same- two common spellings for my name and almost half the time people who have known me for ages get t wrong. Even in an email when they can just look at my previous signature. It doesn't help that one of my best friends has the same name as me with the other spelling.

Traditional. I have a common name spelled creatively and although I prefer my spelling over the traditional it's a PITA to have to spell it out for people all the time. Now I only do it when it matters like giving out my email address.

Traditional.

Like some previous posters, I have a name that uses a less common spelling (not even a unique one) and it always bugs me that I have to spell it out. I have friends whom I've known for close to 20 years now who still spell it wrong.

Traditional.

But I agree that some names can be spelled multiple ways while still being traditional, like Lukas from your list, or Catherine/ Kathryn, Caitlin and all its forms, Kristina/ Christina, etc. But one of our name criteria was that it had one far and away most common way to spell it so our kids wouldn't have to spell it out their whole lives.

Traditional, but with the same caveat that @mrs.shinerbock: mentioned. If the spelling is traditional in any language, I'm fine with it (e.g. Kristoffer is not a "unique" spelling of Christopher, it just happens to be the Scandinavian form of the name)
