That being said:</p> <p>For the first couple of months I would only feed in front of my husband because we were still trying to get the hang of things. </p> <p>Now, it kind of depends on where I'm at and who's around. On vacation I nursed her just about everywhere (restaurants, mall, airplane, airport, etc.) because I knew I would never see those people again and didn't always have the ability to get up and leave. I nurse in front of my MIL but not my FIL. I nurse in front of my whole family (mom, dad, sis, BIL). I try to not nurse in public here because prior to having kids I was a teacher and seeing a former student while nursing just seems like it would be super awkward.</p> <p>I always use a cover and if I know I'm going to be nursing in public I try to wear a nursing tank and easy access shirt so I'm as covered as possible.</p> <p>My husband and I were both very sure of the fact that I wouldn't nurse in public and would always go to the car, other room, fitting room, etc. but now he's completely comfortable with it too and even gets defensive if someone suggests I go somewhere else. Before having LO, I was pretty modest as well and thought I'd feed in private. Once LO got here though, I decided I didn't want to be stuck at home all the time so DH and I took LO out when she was a week old with the sole intent of feeding her in public so I could get used to it. We went for sushi at a crowded place, DH helped me with the cover, and I nursed LO at the table. After that, I was completely comfortable feeding anywhere and in front of anyone, with or without a cover. At first, I wanted to be alone (or just with DH/my sister) and uncovered because I needed to see her the whole time. As we got better, I stopped leaving the room we were in (if we had family over or were visiting family) and just nursed under a cover but I wan't ready to do a 'mall' or 'out and about' nursing session unless I was in my car. Then we got super good at it and I would nurse anyhwere (mall/park/library) under a cover and those were the golden days. Now that she is almost 11 months old, she can't focus ANYWHERE where there might me a distraction so we need a quiet space, and usually she doesn't tolerate a cover very well anymore. It's almost like we're back at the beginning, I need a quiet room and no cover. But I would have gone stir crazy if I had to be home every time baby ate. I did take pumped milk with me in a bottle to help out but if it was really hot out sometimes I'd worry that I didn't have enough ice packs on it or didn't bring enough bottles and convenience at some points def won. Baby loved to go out and about and I felt no reason to be home bound just because I might have to NIP. And stayed that way. I mean during labor you can't do much to keep covered up so I didn't really care. But LO is 4 months old and I still prefer nursing in private. I've done it with friends with the cover and am ok with that. But when at friends houses with hubbies I go to another room.
