Men, hands down. The only exception to the rule is that my boss is a female and she's beyond awesome. But that's rare.

Men are almost always more laid back, less by the book, more humorous and more rational. Women tend to be very catty, cliquey, spreading gossip and god forbid you have a bad female boss and you're also a female - you'll never get promoted because she'll see you as competition.

I worked at a library (all female staff - except the courier, who happened to be my dad). I worked in the Army (I was one of two females among about a dozen males.) I preferred the library, because everyone who worked there WANTED to be there and enjoyed the actual job. However, when working with females, I find that a wide age span helps. Library had a 70 year old, two 50 somethings, a late-30s woman, late 20s, and early 20s. In the army, every female but one was within 6 years my age (and that one kind of went completely insane.) Library women were all friendly. Army women were quick to spread nasty gossip, and I was quick to avoid knowing anything about anyone else's sex life.

I've worked primarily with men but there have been some instances of women. I've noticed a few things...first, women managers like to help other women come up the ranks, but only so far, as they then go into protection mode. For some reason, I didn't see men in the equivalent positions behaving the same way. Some women also project their experiences on other women, like they went part time for a period or whatever, so therefore every woman should do the same. The men didn't really consider what their paths were.

I used to work in a group of 6 women and 1 man. Working with mostly women meant that there was so much drama. Who was working harder than who, and who said what about the other person. Then I moved to a group with 4 guys and me. It was so laid back, no drama, but I missed the companionship, the talking about everything and anything. Now I'm in a group with 5 women and 3 guys. That the way to go. Can still get my conversation/gossip from the women, but there are enough guys around to keep the drama in check. :)

I definitely prefer men. Having worked in both environments, working with mostly men is much easier to handle. Mainly, men say what they think; woman tend to beat around the bush too much and worry about perceptions more in a way I find annoying.

I don't have a preference. My immediate team is all female (5) and 1 male... our manager is female and our vp is male.

Our overall team under our VP's umbrella is a good mix of females/males. I have a good balance in resources. :)

Where I work is def more male dominant. In the Military as a women you really seem to have to "prove" yourself more than a man does. Even now working as a civilian for the Military I still see it.
I dont mind working with either even though I am more use to working with men. Sadly because in this field you have to "prove" yourself so much its VERY easy to get horrible rumors and stereoypes. So a lot of women do tend to be snarky towards other women, but you just find the ones who arent that way and back eachother up. When I was still active duty military and around my community.....if you were a girl you were one of two things. You were either a "Sl*t" or a "B#t$%". Seemed no matter how hard you tried you were one or the other, and you just do your best to find a group where you could be "neutral". Really had to be selective with who you associated yourself with.

I would love to have an opportunity to work with more women so I can say for sure which I prefer!

I'm an engineer and work primarily with men. In my five years working at this company, I have worked closely with only four other women, and I liked three of them very much. I had problems with one of them, but I've also had problems with men I've worked with.

I have found that I prefer to have a female boss than a male boss though, especially in a company full of men. I enjoyed my review process with my female boss so much more than I have with any of my male bosses. I think being surrounded by men all the time made us really connect because we were both women. Plus when I had issues with my co-workers, she seemed more understanding than most men would be. Women, in general, tend to be more empathetic, so I have an easier time opening up to them if I have issues.

I prefer to work with men. I find that women can be so caddy in the workplace. Men don't care about 1/2 of the BS that women do, so it makes it easier to just work, instead of always playing politics.

@mrbee: I guess all I can say is 'from experience it's worked out that way'. Analyzing it, I'd say that it removes the sometimes-awkwardness that comes up when working with men if someone does something that seems like flirting. And I can't really pinpoint why it's better than working with women for me, but working with gay men has always has been my best work relationships. Maybe because there is no sense of 'competition' as a gal.....not that I actually think about that but maybe there is something there subconsciously.

I prefer working with men. I worked in a small office where I was the only woman for a year. I really enjoyed that job. I have mostly brothers and male cousins. I tend to get awkward around large groups of women. I think that has something to do with it.

I prefer to work with men. I have worked with women before and just can't connect with them. Men are laid back and easy. Womens are catty, high strung and sensitive. I work at a company with 2 other women, the rest are men. One is a complete..... You know. The other is older and very laid back. If they were all like the second one, I wouldn't have a problem with women!

@mrbee: We're all similar ages and work in a medical office. Sure there is cheerful banter, but we are all very team oriented and make sure everyone has support. In part because none of us can completely do another's job and it's a small office. We're all essential. It also helps that we get along out of the office, so it's kind of like working with a bunch of buddies. BUT we also check in on each other--hey, did you notice such-and-so?
No one wants to be the one holding everyone else back.
It's fairly laid back, but there's always someone willing to help, or with something to keep me busy when I'm bored. It works well. Actually our patients compliment on how our office is like a well oiled machine and very professional. It's pretty cool.

I prefer to work with and for women. I usually get along with whoever but have worked with irritating people of both sexes. Older middle aged men are usually who I get along with least though as bosses. I'm small and blond and look young and maybe it's my interpretation but I always feel like they don't take me seriously and are very condescending, which then makes me be a bit aggressive with trying to prove myself, which makes them try and assert themselves more and it's a bad cycle. I've never had this problem when I've worked for women, I get along great with women and get rave reviews whenever I've had female bosses, and I don't have the problem with male co-workers, but older men I haven't been able to figure out how to work with them well. To be sexist about it they say 'fatherly' stuff or weirdly sexual stuff that irritates me and I have a hard time not showing that irritation.

As a teacher of young children, I've only worked with TWO men in a childcare/preschool setting. While I've made a lot of friends (a few being really close friends), most of the women seem to be VERY catty. It can get really annoying and exhausting to be around people who continuous cut others down.

I'm not sure how it would be to work with men because like I said, I've only really worked with a couple. Those men were funny, light-hearted, and honestly really refreshing to be around.

i think it's the working with the particular person, vs whether they're men or women. but in general, i do think women are more catty. very annoying. guys are definitely more fun to work with. they joke around a lot (at least my coworkers) and always keep me laughing. the ladies in my firm are cool to work with (our firm pretty much hires personable people)... but i do think women in charge think they have something to prove so have a very "in-charge" attitude that rubs other women the wrong way.

I've never had a lot of male coworkers. One place I worked I was surrounded by older women. I always felt like I was being judged, even for what I would eat for lunch. But that could be because I was covering for someone on maternity leave who they loved and they didn't love that I wasn't her. But they still could have been nicer to me!

My favorite coworkers were a group of 5 women my age running a treatment center for adults with mental illnesses. It was just so neat to me that a place full of older men and women was run by young, smart women. Plus it was like working with my friends, we'd have game nights and gossip during meetings.

women can be so cruel to other women! i hate it!

i think i can work with anyone. jerk is gender-neutral, so as long as they're good, easy-going people, i don't care if they are male or female.

the only office i've ever worked in was a christian non-profit, so i'm sure it's a little different than most offices, but it was mostly women. i actually really loved it. my supervisor and big boss were both women, and they were incredibly sensitive, kind, and compassionate. plus, we all had lots of girl chat during the day, and that was fun. :)
