I would leave it right near his head though so he could reinsert it if needed. It made it really easy to wean him off of it but he was a great sleeper by that point. However my 5 year old step-daughter gets her thumb pulled out while she's sleeping, I think she's too old to suck her thumb. That and it's caused medical issues with her, but I'm just the wicked step-mother that takes her comfort away (from Mom...)
