I guess I'm in the minority because even in the beginning I skipped sessions. I started pumping around four weeksso that I could get more sleep. after the first few days I just started sleeping through that feed while DH gave him a bottle. I would pump extra through the day to make up for that bottle by pumping after I'd nurse while he napped and after he went to sleep. My supply was never an issue and I was able to more than replace his middle of the night feed. I figured some babies sleep through the night early and that's what I was instructing my body to do. He ended up dropping that feed 2 weeks later.

I have done it on the occasion that I am in dire need of sleep! I just don't go more than 4 hours.

@Foodnerd81: this is what I thought too. And I just get up and feed him because its easier than pumping!

@Foodnerd81: that's what I thought but apparently not! I am mostly doing it because I want her to get used to taking a bottle. Once I am just trying to build a freezer stash it'll be fine because there won't be any sessions I'll have to make up for, but pumping just to let DH feed her probably won't be a daily occurrence.

@Foodnerd81: that's exactly why I never actually did that...it was never really a break, since I would have had to wake up and pump (both bc I was engorged and to protect supply, although sleeping through it once I think is fine).

It depends on the situation.... I usually just try to nurse her when I get home. My supply is ok enough that I can skip one and not have it be affected/not be engorged. The first time I did skip one though, around 4 weeks, holy moly the boobs were hurtin! Now I'm lax about it.

I like that you are asking so many of the same questions I have!

My question is, isn't one of the reasons for pumping that we get a break? (At this point, on leave, not pumping at work)? I'd love Dh to be able to give her a bottle so I can sleep, but I can't figure out the logistics. I also think an occasional missed session won't make a big difference (like one morning I was SO tired and had fed her but she was still hungry, so he gave her an ounce). But I don't know and am pretty paranoid myself!

Yes, in the early months, I always pumped when DS got a bottle. When I was going out somewhere, I would pump right before I left, then just nurse when I got home. And I usually would only be gone a max of 2 hours. I am more relaxed about it now and will skip pumping, but DS is 10.5 months.

In the early months I couldn't go without pumping because I'd get so engorged!

I think around five - six months is when I could skip a pump here and there and not get engorged and also not hurt my supply

I don't because I just don't get a chance sometimes. My supply has seemed to be fine and R is 9 weeks old. I go back to work next week so it is what it is at this point in terms of supply.

@lawbee11: I pumped every time i missed a session for a LONG time.. months! I never had any supply issues, but i was paranoid that I would reduce my supply if i missed.

until i became confident of my supply and nursing relationship, i was pretty anal about pumping whenever i missed a nursing session. but now i'm okay with pumping as soon as i get home or missing the session (usually the former happens). although LO has 3 bottles at daycare, and i usually just pump twice. i found that my overall yield was not that much greater when i pumped 3x at work, which was also pretty time-consuming.

I did. I pumped while out sometimes if I knew I was going to miss a session. I pumped in the car more than a few times :) If I wasn't able to nurse LO while out and I missed a session I pumped as soon as I could. I was very paranoid about my supply and kept this up the entire time we breastfed.

I did in the beginning, both to keep up supply and to replace the pumped milk that Lo had in a bottle. If you don't need to worry about replacing milk, I think i'ts fine to skip a pump every once in a while.

I just started pumping so I apologize if this is a dumb question.. I know I am normally supposed to pump if I miss a nursing session (so if DH gives M a bottle of pumped milk before bed I should pump while he's doing that), but what if I am away from home?

Say I go get a pedicure or run some errands and while I am gone M gets a bottle of pumped milk. Obviously I can't pump while I am out, so do I pump as soon as I get home, or is it ok to skip a session occasionally? I don't want to do anything to negatively impact my supply, but I also worry about pumping as soon as I get home because what if she's hungry again soon after?

She'll be 4 weeks on Saturday and today is the first day I've pumped so my supply is pretty well established.

Any advice/suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
