@psw27: Awww.. that's awesome! I hope Sweet P one day guzzles bottles. She's a good eater, but I think she might have silent reflux or something because if she has any gas at all she refuses to drink more until she burps well, but also is not easy to burp. If only babies could tell us exactly what they need it would be easier. hehe :)

@Mrs. Pinata: Well he's 6 months old, and started out as a preemie so I think he's just making up for things!

@Mrs. Pinata: Hmm I should probably start doing that -- although this is a rare problem with my little piglet. He usually drains any bottle given to him in under 5 minutes...

@mrsrugbee: @psw27: We always put it back in the first after the first feeding to prevent bacteria growing in those 2.5 (or so) hours before the next feeding.

We usually just hold onto it for a few hours and start off his next feeding with it. I also have the Kiinde Kozi! Love that thing!

I don't EVER dump breast milk. I'll give it to her for a second feeding without question.

Thanks everyone! I ended up getting in touch with a local lactation consultant that said that ideally milk would be thrown out after heated once or after baby drinks out of it. But, that more TYPICAL use is to use for another feeding after the first and then dump it. But, she didn't recommend typical use if the baby was a preemie (which Sweet P isn't considered anymore since she's over 8 lbs now) or had any other immune compromised issues. So, we will keep using for a second feed for now.

Although I haven't been heating up the next bottle if it's less than 2 oz or so. BUT, we do have the Kiinde Kozii bottle warmer, which supposedly doesn't kill off the good stuff in breastmilk, so I'm hoping that's helping too. :)

I believe my IBCLC said once it's thawed, just use it within 24 hours (refrigerated), and the same good for 5-8 hours out still applies, so I think you're fine! I'd say just reheat once though, as above posters have said. Breastmilk has antibacterial properties that make it safer to keep out much longer than formula, and you don't have to toss it once baby has had some of it. It would be a shame to toss good breastmilk!

We reheat it a second time and then dump it. I read that there was a tiny study done where they fed a baby and then tested the milk for days after and because of the antibacterial properties of breast milk it actually had less bacteria on day 8 than day 1. This probably means it's killing good bacteria but I figure it also means she isn't going to get sick from reheating it once within 24 hours!

yes, i reused milk from a bottle that LO hadn't finished. i tried to put it in the fridge as soon as possible after the first feeding. i also usually didn't warm up the milk too much. i think the strict be-on-the-safe-side rules say not to do that, but you know, sometimes...

@HabesBabe: yeah i've done this too. sometimes you just can't bear to throw it out. didn't notice any ill effects on LO, so hopefully it was okay!

I re-used milk that was in the same bottle (baby drank out of it, but didn't finish it) within a few hours after putting it back in the fridge.

I've also used defrosted milk that was 48 hours old instead of tossing it at 24! so I'm not as much of a stickler when it comes to those rules.

Yes I agree with @Mrs Green Grass: if it isn't heated or re-fed from the same bottle you're good to go!! If you want to heat the milk, I'd just hear a bit at a time so you don't have to waste it!

I did (with my NICU baby). I never warmed the milk though, I defrosted the milk in the fridge and then I would put the smallest amount I though he would drink in the bottle, then add if necessary. I tossed what he didn't finish, but the milk itself is good for 24 hours (cold). The rest of the defrosted milk would go in a separate bottle.

No, you shouldn't. Both EBM and formula should be thrown out within 1 hour of feeding.

We did if it was in the next couple of hours, anything beyond that we dumped. I think Kellymom and La Leche both said something like it's probably okay but there's not a lot of research on whether or not it's a good or bad.

We had a nicu baby so we tossed whatever he didn't finish from a bottle--fresh or frozen, but that might've been extra cautious since he was so tiny.

Sweet P (6 weeks now!) is fed exclusively with donated expressed breastmilk, but I'm having a hard time getting reliable answers online because most of the information I'm finding refers to fresh breasmilk instead of frozen.

My main question- If she doesn't finish the full bottle of breastmilk in the first sitting we return it to the fridge and re-use it for one more feed (warming it in the breastmilk safe Kiinde Kozii bottle warmer). Do you do the same?

I feel like I learned that this was safe 2.5 years ago when we brought home Little P and he was fed the same way, but now I'm having a hard time finding where I got this information and I'm afraid we should be throwing out the milk if she doesn't finish it on the first feed (which would be devastating because I hate throwing away unused liquid gold!).
