We only have one chapter book so far (with tons of illustrations) and we read the whole thing in one sitting over winter break! I read for over an hour!

@mrbee: the print outs are pretty easy to find stuff. I just do things from Google images. For Harry potter I print out the house crests, for James and the giant peach I printed out pictures of the actual bugs for the story. Takes me like 5 minutes and they have so much fun.

I think the food is their favorite part. I made pesto spiral pasta and called it crocodile tongues, and some peach salad for James and the giant peach. Now James asks for crocodile tongues all the time.

@Mrs. Train: Oh my gosh, so smart!! We should totally xerox/print some of the Magic Treehouse pictures, and put them up around the house!

Interesting about the food too! Love it!!

ps Sorry for the exclamation mark overuse above, I blame you for having such great ideas!

@mrbee: sometimes I try to make a snack or dinner that comes from the book and they really like when I do that. Or I hang up pictures from the book around the house to "decorate" for our movie night. It's pretty fun and the kids love it. My mom just laughs at me. They have been playing Harry potter all weekend!!!

@Andrea: us too. We have a movie night the weekend after we finish a book so they can see the movie. They get so excited about it and about the book. I love it.

@mrbee: James was a little afraid at the end. He told me to stop reading in an angry voice. :) but we kept going. When we watched the movie they were a little scared. Nick said "mom that part with Voldermort is a little freaky." My kids are not super sensitive to scary things though. So I think it depends on how your kids react in general.

@Mrs. Train: Was Harry Potter scary at all for your kids? Was a little worried it was too early to start with the series, but if it worked for your kids... maybe we'll start the first book next!

Over several nights. It took us several months to get through Harry Potter. But now we are reading some shorter ones. It might take just a few nights.

We just read a few chapters a night. We've been reading long books that can't be finished in one night. The Magic Treehouse ones are a lot shorter though. We like those, too!

Our five-year-old loves the "Magic Treehouse" series!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magic_Tree_House_series

We used to read one of the books in the evening, but the books didn't last that long that way! So now we read it over 3 nights, and then have him read us another book for a bit more instead. It's kinda exciting to look forward to how the story ends. Plus it's sad but sometimes I learn stuff from these chapter books.
