For Urban Fantasy, I love Ilona Andrews, Patricia Briggs, and Kelley Armstrong.

A lot of the more traditional fantasy I've read and loved has been more YA-ish, but I'd recommend Mercedes Lackey (the Arrows of Valdemar trilogy), Robin McKinley (the Blue Sword), or Tamora Pierce (starting with the Alanna quartet). I also really love Lynn Flewelling's trilogy that starts with the Bone Doll's Twin. Patricia McKilip is great, and while I don't love Ursula LeGuin myself, she's also a classic.

Oh, and Garth Nix- start with Sabriel. And Maggie Stiefvater's Scorpio Races. And Franny Billingsley's Chime.

Kate Elliott's Spiritwalker trilogy and all of N.K. Jemisin's books have cool non-Western-European-ish settings, which is cool and rare.

Next on my personal scifi/fantasy reading list is Lois McMaster Bujold- I'm usually not into anything set in space, but I've heard really good things.

Like @pelikila I could probably go on for hours on this subject... I read constantly :)

@Minnie_Girl: I've heard a lot about the Game of Thrones, but still haven't tried reading that one. I probably should.

Game of Thrones is fun, even when it's obnoxious (ugh, do we really need six more pages about the khaleesi's breakfast?). Garth Nix's Old Kingdom series and Pullman's His Dark Materials are also great. Ursula Le Guin's Earthsea is classic!

I also love anything written by Robin McKinley. She writes great, strong female protagonists in unique settings.

@Lozza: I haven't. I've been reading the Kate Daniels series too but it is more Urban Fantasy than Fantasy so I didn't mention it. I'll have to look into the free serial. Thanks!

@Bao: If you really want to run the gamut of Fantasy I can go on. Jenna Black's Devil series. Patricia Briggs' Mercy Thompson series (Urban Fantasy) and Masques/Wolfsbane. Jeaniene Frost's Night Huntress and the various spinoffs (Urban Fantasy). Kim Harrison's The Hollows series (Urban Fantasy). Kalayna Price's Alex Craft series (Urban Fantasu). Maria V. Snyder (start with the Poison series and work your way to the glass and then healer series).

@pelikila: I freaking LOVE Ilona Andrews. I'll read anything by her/them (since it's a husband/wife team). Have you read the free serial they started (but haven't updated in a while) called "Clean Sweep"?

@Bao: Can you be more specific about what you want? Urban fantasy? Medieval-ish settings? Non-western settings? Happy endings? Romance? Humor?

The Wheel of Time by Robert Jordan. It's an epic fantasy series, about as nerdy as it gets =P The first book starts off slow but when it gets interesting, it's hard to put it down! I like how he depicts women and the characters and character development overall is pretty good, IMO.

In terms of sci fi/fantasy (if that is what you mean) I love Michelle Sagara's Cast series (Chronicles of Elantra). I also really like Ilona Andrew's Edge series. I'll also put in a plug for Vicki Pettersson's Zodiac series though the very last book kind of disappointed me (loved all the other books).
