In the town where we live, we have a pay-as-you-go garbage pickup, and you have to pay $2/garbage can to get it taken away on garbage day. Recycling, however, is free :) We always have way more recycling than garbage. It's also the law, our landlord can be fined (and has been in the past) if the refuse is not separated properly. We made the mistake of throwing some junk mail in the regular trash and our former landlord got fined. We have bi-weekly pick-ups, and it's one of those where you just dump all your stuff in and they sort it...wherever they sort it. For as easy as it is, we could be a lot better. At our current home they do not offer that, so we are not as good with recycling. We live in MI so we return cans for .10 but I would really like to start recycling again.
